Sablayan is a Filipino community on the west coast of Mindoro , halfway between the south and north-west tip.
The name comes from an old Visaya term and means “where the waves meet”. In the days of sailing ships, this was a place that was visited in bad weather. The coastal town has 83,169 inhabitants (as of August 1, 2015), who live mainly from agriculture and fishing. A small cargo port is increasingly providing growth in the remote area. Sablayan is the starting point for trips to the diving island Pandan Island and the world-famous Apo reef . As a result, a small tourism sector has developed, but it is hardly growing any more.
Inland is Mount Iglit Baco National Park and on the northeastern border to the municipality of Naujan is Mount Halcon , which is 2582 meters high . There is a campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in the community .
Barangays
Sablayan is politically divided into 22 barangays .
