WINNER (Korean / Hangul: 위너) is a four-member South Korean K-pop group that was founded in 2014 and is under contract with YG Entertainment . The group consists of Seungyoon, Mino, Seunghoon and Jinwoo.

The group was first introduced in 2013 in the survival show WIN: Who Is Next as "Team A". In this show, Team A competed against Team B, with all participants being trainees at YG Entertainment. The winning team got the chance to debut as the first YG boy band since Big Bang's debut eight years ago. At the end of this broadcast, the name "WINNER" was given to Team A after they had won all three rounds of the public vote.

After several delays, WINNER made her Korean debut at the YG Family Concert on August 15, 2014. Her broadcast debut followed on August 17, 2014 with Inkigayo. On September 10, the group debuted in Japan. WINNER's debut is considered to be one of the best K-pop debuts of 2014.

Winner's debut album, released in 2014, is called 2014 S / S and contains the singles Empty and Color Ring . 2016 their EP was released E: Exit . To date, WINNER has sold over 200,000 physical albums as a group and more than 8.6 million digital recordings, including 4,749,219 records as a group and 3,885,050 as soloists.

history

Pre-debut

In 2010, WINNER's leader Kang Seung-yoon was a participant in the Superstar K2 singing competition , finishing in fourth place. The following year he signed a contract with YG Entertainment and made his debut as an actor on the sitcom "High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged" . In 2013 he made a solo debut in which he played several songs, a. a. released the song It Rains .

Lee Seung-hoon was also a former participant in a singing show. He took part in K-Pop Star 1 in 2012 and took fourth place. He was then recruited by Yang Hyun-suk. On May 16, it was announced that YG Entertainment had signed Seung-hoon.

Song Min-ho began his music career as an underground rapper under the stage name "Mino", where he collaborated with other undergroup rappers who later became idols, such as Block B's Zico, Kyung and PO and SPEED's Taewoon. Mino was initially scheduled to make his debut as a member of Block B, but he left the group before their debut due to personal reasons. In 2011 he made his debut under Y2Y Contents Company as part of the BoM group, which disbanded two years later. In 2013, he joined YG Entertainment through an audition after being discovered by acting as an actor on The Strongest K-Pop Survival from 2012, which was broadcast on Channel A.

Kim Jin-woo attended Joy Dance Plug In Music Academy before joining YG Entertainment. He was discovered there by Bigbang's Seungri, who then took him to the agency. Jin-woo became a trainee in 2010.

Nam Tae-hyun was auditioned by YG Entertainment in 2011. He and Jin-woo performed as backup dancers at the YG Family Concert in 2011.

2013–2014: WIN: Who Is Next and debut

The five trainees competed as “Team A” on the reality show WIN: Who Is Next , which was broadcast on Mnet, in order to be able to debut as a group if they won. During the final episode on October 25, 2013, it was announced that Team A had won the competition and would debut as a group under the name "WINNER". As a result, WINNER released two singles on October 28th and supported Big Bang's Japanese Dome Tour, which began on November 15th. Furthermore, the members of WINNER appeared on November 9th as backup dancers in Taeyang's music video for "Ringa Linga". From December 13th, WINNER appeared on their own reality show WINNER TV , the ten episodes of which were broadcast on Mnet.

In 2014 Seungyoon and Mino worked on a track for Yoon Jong Shin's March Project. Between June and August of the same year, the group members were introduced to the public again in anticipation of WINNER's debut through a series of teaser images and videos.

WINNER's official debut showcase was held on August 6th, with their 2014 S / S album released digitally on August 12th and physically released on August 14th. On the day of WINNER's debut, YG Entertainment's share price rose 6.57%, which is an indicator of investor confidence in WINNER's debut. The group first attended a music show, Inkigayo , on August 17th . There they got their first victory at M! Countdown during their debut stage to become the fastest male group to win on a music show. The official name for WINNER's fan club became known as the "Inner Circle". After the album was released, two music videos for WINNER's title tracks "Color Ring" and "Empty" followed, which were released on Youtube. The album reached number one on the Billboard World Albums Chart. On August 30th, a music video for Mino's solo track "I'm Him" ​​with cameo appearances by the rest of the members was released.

On September 10th, WINNER began their Japanese promotions for their 2014 album S / S: Japan Collection and held their first Japanese solo concert on September 11th. The group successfully completed their tour in Tokyo on October 11th. A total of 25,000 fans took part in this tour. On December 9, 2014, Fuse announced the 13 Top Breakout Artists of 2014, with WINNER being the only South Korean group at number 11 on this list. On December 17th, Dazed Digital released the top 20 K-Pop tracks of 2014, with WINNER ranked 10th with their song "Color Ring".

2015–2016: solo activities, EXIT and Taehyun's departure

In 2015 WINNER suspended its group activities. During this time the individual members went about their solo activities. Taehyun has participated as an actor in several film productions, namely MBC's web drama Midnight's Girl , SBS's Late Night Restaurant and the Sino-Korean series Under the Black Moonlight . Seungyoon also returned to acting with the successful CJ E&M web drama We Broke Up , which had over 16 million viewers. Jinwoo appeared in the Sino-Korean drama The Magical Cell Phone , while Mino competed in the fourth season of Mnet's rap competition Show Me the Money , where he came in second. A number of Mino's digital releases of his songs on this program have achieved commercial success, including "Fear," which Taeyang starred on and which became the most downloaded single on the show, with over a million digital sales. In December it was announced that the group would return after their hiatus in 2016 with a comeback, which would be split into five 'project releases'.

The group's first release in 2016 was the “Warm-up” duet between Mino and Taehyun entitled “Pricked (사랑 가시)”. Although this single was not promoted, it reached # 2 on MelOn and # 1 on iTunes in nine countries, including: a. Singapore, Thailand and Brunei. Prior to the group's official comeback, a number of covers for their title tracks were released as promotional teasers, with the individual cover singers being Lee Hi, Zion.T, Epik High, Taeyang, Akdong Musician, Dean and G-Dragon. The mini album EXIT: E was released on February 1st, marking WINNER's return after an 18-month hiatus since their debut. The group promoted the title tracks "Baby Baby" and "Sentimental" from their EP, the first EP from the "Exit Movement" series with upcoming titles EXIT: X, EXIT: I and EXIT: T , which was released over the year should be. 2017: Fate number For and Our Twenty For

After Taehyun left the group, Winner released two single albums in 2017, each with two songs and the accompanying music videos. On April 4th, the album Fate Number For was released with the songs Really Really and Fool , Really Really was a big hit in Korea and the music video has now over 150 million views on YouTube. On August 4th they released the album Our Twenty For with Love Me Love Me and Island .
