Hanam ( 하남시 ) is a city in Gyeonggi-do Province in South Korea . The city has a population of over 256,000 and is one of many satellite cities that surround Seoul and make up the Sudogwon region.

geography

Hanam is a dormitory city of Seoul, which is on its eastern border. It borders on Namyangju in the north, Seongnam in the south and Gwangju in the west . The landscape is mostly mountainous. The area of ​​the city lies in the basin of one of the largest rivers on the Korean peninsula , the Hangang .

history

In the year 6 BC In BC the Korean ruler Onjo founded a new city in the area of ​​modern Hanam, which was called Wiryeseong. In 370, Wiryeseong became the capital of the early Korean state of Baekje and remained in that status until 475. Later, the area came under the control of another state, Silla , and in 664 the city was renamed Hansanju and in 757 Hanju. In 940, the city of Gwangju was established here and the modern Hanam area became part of this city. Hanam became a separate city in 1989 and separated from Gwangju.
