Namyangju ( kor. 남양주 ) is a city in the South Korean province of Gyeonggi-do .

The city is located on the Hangang in the northeast region of Gyeonggi-do Province and borders Seoul to the west . On January 1, 1995, Namyangju received city ( -si ) status . Mayor is Lee Seok-woo ( 이석우 ). It is located on the Seoul Ring Expressway and Expressway 60 , which runs from Seoul to Chuncheon . It also connects the city with the Seoul Subway (Jungang and Gyeongchun Lines).

The Gwangneung tombs of King Sejo and his wife from 1468 and 1483 are in the city area. In addition, the Bongseonsa, built in 969, is located in Namyangju, which is one of the 24 main temples of the Buddhist Jogye order.

During the Korean War , the so-called Namyangju massacre took place here.
