Uiwang ( 의왕 ) is a city in Gyeonggi-do Province in South Korea . The city has a population of over 155,000 and is one of many satellite cities that encircle Seoul and make up the Sudogwon region. Its largest immediate urban neighbor is Anyang . The low peaks of the Gwangju Mountains shape the landscape of the city.
geography
Uiwang is a little south of Seoul. It is bounded to the east by the Baegunsan , Barasan Mountains , the lower slopes of Cheonggyesan and Maebongsan , to the south by the city of Suwon , to the west by Ansan , Gunpo and Anyang, and to the north by Gwacheon .
The source of the Anyangcheon - a tributary of the Hangang - is in Uiwang, as is the source of the Haguicheon , which is itself a tributary of the Anyangcheon. The source of the Hwanggujicheon is also in Uiwang, it flows south and finally flows into the Yellow Sea in Asan Bay .
history
The present city emerged on January 1, 1989 from parts of Siheung City .
Infrastructure
Rail transport is of great importance in Uiwang, which is home to the Korean Railway Museum and Korea's National Railway College . Seoul Subway Line 1 runs through the city, as does the Gyeongbu Line. In addition, there is a terminal of the shipping company Hanjin Shipping , which is now bankrupt.
The Seoul Ring Expressway, Yeongdong Expressway, National Road 1 and Gwacheon-Bongdam Expressway (309) pass through Uiwang.
