Min Yoon-gi (Hangul: 민윤기; born March 9, 1993 in Daegu , South Korea ), also known as Suga or Agust D , is a South Korean rapper , songwriter , dancer and music producer . He is a member of the boy band BTS ( Hangul : 방탄 소년단), which was founded by Big Hit Entertainment in 2013 . In 2016 he released his first solo mixtape .
biography
Min Yoon-gi was born on March 9, 1993 in Daegu , South Korea, the younger of two sons. He began composing at the age of 13. He took an interest in rap after hearing "Reggae Muffin" by Stony Skunk because, according to him, it was "unlike anything he's ever heard before". He started his rapper career after hearing the song "Fly" by the South Korean hip-hop group Epik High .
Before his debut with BTS , he worked as an underground rapper under the stage name Gloss . As part of the hip-hop crew D-Town he wrote the song "518-062" in 2010 to commemorate the Gwangju uprising of 1980. He was cast on a Bighit rap casting called Hit It at the age of 17 and joined the BTS trainee roster in 2010.
Career
Since 2013: BTS
On June 13, 2013, Min Yoon-gi made his debut as rapper Suga of the boy group BTS (Bangtan Boys) on M! Countdown from Mnet with the track "No More Dream" from their debut album "2 Cool 4 Skool". Since then he has been writing and producing numerous songs for his group, including the successful singles "Blood Sweat & Tears", "DNA" and "Fake Love". The Korea Music Copyright Association , according to, seemed Suga at more than 85 songs with.
On December 9, 2013, during the doctoral week in Japan, Suga suffered from appendicitis and had to fly back to Korea, where he was operated on. Because of this, he fell out of the subsequent activities of the Bangtan Boys for a short time.
In October 2018, South Korean President Moon Jae-in Suga and the remaining members awarded a medal for their extraordinary contribution to Korean culture and its spread. BTS are the youngest and first idols to receive this medal in the cultural awards.
In June 2019, Suga was named a member of the Recording Academy with the rest of the BTS members . Membership enables him, among other things, to vote for the Grammy winners.
Since 2016: solo activities
In August 2016 Suga brought under his solo artist name Agust D his first solo mixtape Agust D out. Agus is Suga backwards, while TD stands for "D-Town", his hometown of Daegu . The album was released for free on SoundCloud and also dispensed with a commercial studio album because, according to his own statement, this restricts him artistically. Among other things, he raps about his depression , suicidal thoughts, social phobia and the negative consequences of the limelight. In the song "The Last" he talks about his therapies and a stay in a psychiatric hospital, a topic that is still a taboo in Korean society in Korea. For the tracks “Agust D” and “Give It To Me” he shot music videos that were clicked millions of times on YouTube . During a fan event, he and his bandmate Jimin presented the song "Tony Montana".
On September 14, 2016, his mixtape was one of the five artists presented at the weekly edition of Artists to Watch by TIDAL .
As part of the BTS Festa 2017 , he released a version of `` So Far Away '' with bandmates Jin and Jungkook (originally with singer Suran on his mixtape).
In January 2019, Suga appeared as a guest rapper in singer Lee So-ra's song "Song Request." The song debuted at No. 3 on the Gaon Digital Chart and No. 2 on Billboard World Songs with 3,000 downloads in the United States.
In December 2019 the American singer and songwriter Halsey released the song "Suga's Interlude" from her third studio album Manic, which was written by Suga and in which he can also be heard.
Work as a music producer
In 2017 Suga first produced a song for an artist other than BTS . The song "Wine" by the Korean R&B singer Suran reached the top of the Korean charts within hours, for which the singer publicly thanked Suga, the producer of the song. At the Melon Music Awards 2017, the two received the Hot Trend Award for their collaboration .
In 2019 Suga produced the song Eternal Sunshine on Epik High's album "Sleepless in__________". In July 2019 Suga appeared as a producer and songwriter on the single We Don't Talk Together by the South Korean singer Heize. The song Eight, produced and recorded jointly by Suga and IU , was released in May 2020 . The song successfully entered the charts of many download providers such as iTunes worldwide .
Private life
Since 2019 he has lived in Hannam-dong , Seoul , South Korea. In 2018 he bought a luxury apartment in South Korea valued at $ 3 million but still resides in Hannam-dong. [46]
In 2014, he promised to buy his fans meat if he was to be successful as a musician. Four years later, on his 25th birthday, he donated beef to 39 orphanages under the name “ARMY”, the name of the BTS fan base. On his 26th birthday, he and 329 BT21 Shooky dolls donated 100 million South Korean won ( $ 88,000 ) to the Korean Childhood Cancer Organization. In February 2020, he donated US $ 88,000 to stop the coronavirus from spreading further and to heal those affected.
Suga has spoken openly about mental disorders and equality for the LGBTQ + community.
