Wings is the second Korean studio album by the South Korean boy group BTS . It was released on October 10, 2016 under Big Hit Entertainment . The album contains 15 pieces of music, of which Blood Sweat & Tears was released as a single.

The album was a commercial success both nationally and internationally. It debuted at number 26 on the US Billboard 200, breaking the record for the highest chart placement by a Kpop act in the United States. With Wings , BTS became the first kpop artist to stay on the US charts for more than a week. Blood Sweat & Tears became Bangtan's first national hit song on the Gaon Charts. Wings is the best-selling album in Gaon's history and in 2016.

On February 13, 2017, Wings was re-released as a re-package album with three new songs under the title WINGS: You Never Walk Alone . With You Never Walk Alone , Wings achieved two million sales figures worldwide, making BTS into “million sellers”.

From 4th to 13th In September 2016, BigHit Entertainment released seven short films featuring the members' solo tracks. Each film contains quotes and motifs from Herman Hesse's story Demian . The solo songs are Jungkooks Begin , Jimins Lie , Vs Stigma , Sugas First Love , RMs Reflection , J-Hopes Mama and Jins Awake .

The group held a press conference on September 10th to present their album. The Leader RM explained the concept and the meaning behind it . “The harder a temptation is to resist, the more you think and hesitate about it. This uncertainty is part of the growth. Blood Sweat & Tears is a song that shows how to think, choose and grow. ”The“ wings ”also symbolize growing up. Suga added, "The song conveys an optimistic determination to use our wings to go far in life, even when faced with temptation."

During their livestream on the V Live channel on September 9th, members discussed their solo tracks. Jungkook stated that at the beginning he sings about his trip to Seoul and the first meeting with his group mates. V called Stigma a song of the neo-soul music genre. J-Hope's MAMA describes the childhood memories of his mother. Awake was Jin's first attempt at co-writing. In an additional V-Live broadcast on October 20, 2016, RM explained the songs on the album in more detail. He complimented J-Hope's dancing style for the comeback trailer and Jimin's songwriting for Lie , sharing that First Love reminded him of the importance of the piano to Suga.

The song Am I Wrong is sampling Keb 'Mo's jazz / blues song Am I Wrong - hence the American's Blues - singer credited on the album as co-writer and co-producer.

On February 13, 2017, You Never Walk Alone was released as a re-package album with Spring Day , Not Today and A Supplementary Story: You Never Walk Alone as three new songs. A longer version of Outro: Wings is also available on You Never Walk Alone . The album dominated the South Korean digital charts. Within an hour, the title track Spring Day reached number 1 out of eight online streaming sites - including MelOn, Mnet , Genie and Naver Music. MelOn's side crashed; An error page was displayed when searching for Spring Day because too many users were trying to purchase the song at the same time. The song delivers a warm, comfortable, and hopeful message. It depicts the personal experiences of band members RM and Suga , so as not to lose hope while waiting to be reunited with an estranged friend. Spring Day is an alternative hip-hop song that contains elements of British rock music. The melody was composed by RM .

On November 19, 2016, BTS announced their World Tour Live Trilogy Episode III: The Wings Tour .

Music videos

On October 6, 2016, the teaser for the title track Blood Sweat & Tears was released. The music video was released on October 10th with Wings . The Spring Day teaser came out on February 9th . The following day, another teaser was uploaded to Not Today . The full music video for Spring Day came out at the same time as You Never Walk Alone on February 13th. With nine million clicks, it was the most viewed K-POP music video in 24 hours, before that it was the video clip for Blood Sweat & Tears . The Bangtan Boys later broke their own record with 10 million views of the Not Today music video , which came out on February 20.

Commercial win

Wings

The album was pre-ordered over 500,000 times. With Wings , BTS achieved an all-kill in the Korean charts. In the Gaon album charts both the single Blood Sweat & Tears and Wings debuted at number one. All 15 songs were in the top 50 of the Gaon Singles Chart and together achieved more than one million downloads and eight million streams in the week of release.

Wings was the first album by a South Korean artist to place itself in the British album charts. The album debuted at number 26 on the US Billboard 200. With Wings , BTS became the first kpop artist to stay in the US charts for more than a week. Blood Sweat & Tears also debuted at # 86 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, while Wings debuted at # 19 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart.

You Never Walk Alone

You Never Walk Alone , the re-package album, reached a record-breaking 700,000 physical pre-orders. It became BTS '7th # 1 album on Gaon . In China, 144,400 copies of the album were marketed and was the best-selling album of the week on QQ Music. It debuted at number 61 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart - an extension of Bangtan's record as the most charted K-pop act (4). Spring Day landed at number 8 on the US iTunes charts. The top 10 had not been reached by any other K-POP entertainer before. Spring Day broke another record when it debuted at number 15 on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart . The song reached # 1 on the World Digital Songs Sales, while Not Today , A Supplementary Story: You Never Walk Alone, and Outro: Wings took # 2–4. The Bangtan Boys are the first artists to simultaneously take the top four places in the World Digital Songs Sales .

criticism

Wings received mostly positive feedback from music critics. One reason for this is the inclusion of topics such as mental health and women's empowerment in the album.

Jeff Benjamin wrote for FUSE: "The new album of the rising K-Pop phenomenon does everything right by spreading the artistic wings of the seven members and thus solidifying their individual identities - while keeping the band identity stronger than before." FUSE placed the album in eighth place on the 20 Best Albums of 2016 list. Billboard called the album a "success in itself" and praised the hard work of the members in the production. Billboard named Wings the best K-pop album of the year. The mature sound and the addressing of otherwise taboo topics received a lot of attention.

Tamar Herman wrote about You Never Walk Alone for Billboard and criticized Spring Day positively for the "dreamy vocals and wistful lyrics".
