biography

childhood

RM was born on September 12, 1994 in Dongjak-gu , South Korea, and has a younger sister. When he was 4 years old (international age) he moved with his family to Ilsan-gu. Before his debut with BTS he was an underground rapper under the stage name Runch Randa . He brought out a few tracks and once worked with underground rapper Zico .

As a child, RM mostly learned English by watching the American cult series " Friends " with his mother. During his school days he actively wrote poetry and often received awards for his poetry. He published his works on an online poetry website for about a year, where it received moderate attention. This made RM interested in a literary career, but decided against it. At the age of 11, RM became interested in hip-hop music after listening to Epik High's "Fly" in fifth grade. He found that the song had brought him solace and for that reason decided to dig deeper into the genre. After one of his teachers introduced him to the American rapper Eminem , RM became increasingly interested in poetry, printed texts that he thought were "cool" and shared them with his friends. RM then switched to lyrics writing, stating that his poems became lyrics when combined with music.

Early youth

In 2007, in his first year of secondary school (7th grade), RM began rapping in local amateur hip-hop circles and made his first self-composed recording using the Adobe Audition program (then called Cool Edit ). He later attended his first concert in 2008. RM eventually became more active in the Korean underground hip-hop scene under the nickname "Runch Randa" and released a number of tracks and collaborations with other underground rappers such as Zico.

At school, RM scored the top 1% in the country on National University Entrance Exams (CSATs) in Language, Math, Foreign Language and Social Studies and has an IQ of 148. RM's parents were strongly against his interest in a musical career because of his academic achievements, and initially RM decided to put the music aside to focus on his school career. To convince his mother that he could become a rapper, he asked her if "she would like to have a son who is rapper in first place or a student in 5,000th place".

He is currently enrolled at the Global Cyber University.

Career

2013-present: debut with BTS

In 2009 RM applied for Big Deal Records and passed the first round together with Samuel Seo, but failed in the second round because he forgot his text. However, after the show, rapper Sleepy exchanged contact information with RM and later mentioned the young rapper to Big Hit Entertainment producer Pdogg. In 2010, Sleepy contacted RM and encouraged him to advance for Big Hit CEO Bang Si-hyuk. Bang offered RM a place at the record label and RM immediately accepted the offer without his parents' knowledge. The encounter with RM prompted Bang and Pdogg to start producing a hip-hop group that eventually became the Kpop group BTS .

That same year, at the age of 16, RM was officially signed as the first member of BTS to join BigHit Entertainment. RM trained for three years with his bandmates Min Yoon-gi and Jung Ho-seok, who later became known as Suga and J-Hope, respectively. He also worked as a songwriter for the girl group Glam and helped create their debut single "Party (XXO)" which explicitly contains a pro-LGBTQ message and which Billboard called "one of the most progressive songs by a K-pop girl group in the last Decade ”was praised
