José Mauro de Vasconcelos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

José Mauro de Vasconcelos (born February 26, 1920 in Rio de Janeiro , † July 24, 1984 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian writer of the 20th century.

Life

Vasconcelos' mother was Indian, his father Portuguese. He studied medicine, law, philosophy and painting and then made a living as a teacher and nurse with the jungle inhabitants. He was also at times a fisherman and banana loader.

Work and style

Vasconcelos, one of the most widely read Brazilian authors - abroad - never achieved comparable fame in his home country. Vasconcelos is known for its simple style that leads the reader into a world of tenderness and sensitivity. So typical of the Brazilian attitude to life, he is also able to provide sad, even tragic topics and events with optimism and spice them up with humor, without ever going wrong in tone.

His successful novel O Meu Pé de Laranja Lima (1968, German under the title: When I grow up or in the new edition My Little Orange Tree ), also celebrated in Brazil, was adapted for the film in 1969 by the Brazilian filmmaker Aurélio Teixeira , but so far never implemented in the cinema. There have been three film adaptations of the book as television series, namely 1970 by TV Tupi , 1980 (remake of the previous film) of the Bandeirantes speech and finally in 1998 again by the Bandeirantes speech.
