GOM Player is an adware - Media Player for Windows , Android and iOS . The software is developed by the South Korean company Gretech Corporation and is available in Korean and English .

The GOM in the name is an acronym and stands for Gretech Online Music . The strengths of the program include the ability to play the majority of media files without an additional codec , but also to play damaged files. Both are features that conventional players, such as Windows Media Player , do not offer or only offer incompletely.

The GOM Player is a media player for FLV files from video portals such as YouTube .

From version 2.1.39.5101 the software is adware. Previously, text advertising was displayed in the player, now an advertising banner blocks the player from closing until this has been confirmed. From version 2.1.40.5106 the advertising banner can be switched off completely.

Codec Finder

For media files that GOM Player cannot play without the required codec, the software tries to find a suitable codec and redirects to a corresponding website with a download option.

Damaged or incomplete files

The program uses a patented technology (patent number 10-0440495-0000, granted July 5, 2004 in the Republic of Korea) for faulty or incomplete (e.g. downloadable) AVI files.

GOM TV

GOM TV is the most popular streaming service in South Korea and is crucial for the software's success there. Various content is offered, from National Geographic documentaries and TV dramas to feature films and adult entertainment.

The services are both ad-financed and offered as pay-per-view . The prices for pay-per-view offers vary from 500 KRW up to 2000 KRW (e.g. for most feature films).

Although the Korean and English versions of the GOM Player are very similar, GOM TV is missing in the English version.

Popularity in South Korea

The GOM Player is South Korea's most popular media player. In July 2007, it had 8.4 million users, compared to 5.4 million users of Windows Media Player. The preferred genres were 69.8% pornography, 43.2% movies, 29.6% soap operas , 21.8% entertainment programs, 11.1% cartoons, and 7% music videos .
