The Nüssli Group (original spelling NUSSLI), based in Hüttwilen, is an internationally active Swiss group of companies specializing in event and exhibition construction .
Nüssli plans, builds, rents and sells temporary structures such as stadiums , stages , grandstands , platforms , pedestrian crossings as well as exhibition stands, pavilions and halls for sports and cultural events as well as business events worldwide .
Nüssli has 23 subsidiaries in Europe, the USA, Mexico and the Middle East. In the other countries, the company operates on a project basis or with partners. The Nüssli Group employs around 450 permanent employees. Personnel capacity can temporarily double in large projects.
history
The company was founded in 1941 by Heini Nüssli (1919–2011) as a carpentry shop in Hüttwilen. Nüssli married Germaine, née Sprenger (1922–2009) in 1949, who contributed her fortune to the working capital and actively supported her husband.
In 1958, the company got into scaffolding and the following year began renting and assembling stands and stages made of wood and tubular steel. In 1961, Nüssli built the grandstands for the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival for the first time in Zug . As a result, Nüssli developed new scaffolding, stage and grandstand systems.
From the 1980s onwards, Nüssli made several takeovers and founded subsidiaries abroad. The first international project was the stage for the Pink Floyd The Wall concert in Berlin in 1990. In the 2000s, international expansion increased and Nüssli got involved in trade fair construction. In 2005 the group achieved sales of CHF 90 million. In 2007, the company spun off the scaffolding division under the name xBau and has since concentrated on the event and exhibition market. In 2014, Nüssli integrated the German exhibition stand construction company Ambrosius, based in Frankfurt, into the group of companies.
In 2016 the company celebrated its 75th anniversary and built the temporary wrestling arena in Estavayer-le-Lac for the 20th time. With 52,016 seats, the "Arène de la Broye" was the largest temporary grandstand system that was ever built for a three-day event anywhere in the world. The Swiss festival was celebrated even bigger in 2019: 56,500 spectators experienced the Swiss wrestling festival in Zug live in the stands.
Areas of activity
Grandstands, stadiums, arenas
Nüssli developed several modular building systems. These are mainly used in grandstands and stadiums.
- Football World Cup 2006 in Germany: temporary event locations, including in Nuremberg, Frankfurt / Main and in Berlin (the "Bundestag arena").
- From 2010 to 2011, Nüssli built the grandstands for " The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo ", the largest music festival in Scotland. The temporarily built and used facility is unique because of its conception as a stationary structure and the difficult construction logistics in and around the walls of the historic castle.
- The temporary Lena-Arena stadium ( airberlin world ) served the Fortuna Düsseldorf football club as an alternative venue. He used the mobile football stadium for three home games in 2011 because the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 was taking place in the Esprit Arena at the same time .
Stages
Nüssli also realizes stages and backdrops for operas, rock and pop concerts and open-air theater performances on the basis of a modular stage system.
- Since 2006, Nüssli has been building the open-air stage in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage monastery district in St. Gallen for the St. Gallen Festival .
- The stage system can also be set up in the water: Thunerseespiele in Thun, Switzerland (since 2003).
- In the last few years the company began to focus increasingly on large stage landscapes for open air festivals in the stage construction sector ; Openair Frauenfeld , Electric Zoo Festival in New York City , Electric Love in Salzburg and Mysteryland in Bethel near New York.
Event structures, overlay
For major sporting and cultural events, Nüssli prepares feasibility studies , plans the requirements and the type of infrastructure required and implements them. This also includes special constructions such as media towers, platforms , platforms , stairs, bridges , archways and ramps .
- Nüssli built the ice slope with steep curves and jumps for the action sports events " Red Bull Crashed Ice " in Lausanne (2013), Munich (2016) and Marseille (2017).
- Nüssli realized a Big Air ramp with a height of 49 m and a length of 120 m for the European Double World Cup 2016 in Big Air Freestyle in Mönchengladbach .
Event halls
Temporary halls are used as event locations for business events as well as sports and cultural events. For example, they represent a temporary solution if your own event or gaming facility is not available.
- The HC Lausanne commissioned Lamb with the planning and construction of a temporary ice rink. It serves as an interim stadium for the ice hockey club until the new Patinoire de Malley home stadium is completed.
- From 2010 to 2012 the musical “Ewigi Liebi” was performed in the temporary “Ewigi Liebi” theater in WankdorfCity in Bern .
Exhibition stands
Nüssli mainly implements the single or multi-storey exhibition stands in individual designs. The components for the brand presence are made by the production facilities in Switzerland, Germany and the Czech Republic.
- On behalf of the Japanese watch manufacturer Seiko , Nüssli realized the appearance at the Baselworld watch and jewelry fair . The two-story booth is designed to be set up repeatedly between 2013 and 2018.
- At the IAA in Frankfurt , Nüssli implemented the brand presentations of various automobile manufacturers; including an exhibition stand with a drivable circuit in 2009 for BMW and a two-story exhibition hall for Audi in 2011, 2013 and 2016.
Museums, exhibitions
Nüssli plans and manufactures showcases and exhibition structures according to the designs of architects or scenographers, also in individual construction.
- In 2009, Nüssli equipped the permanent exhibition “Gallery Collections” at the Swiss National Museum with presentation areas, showcases and partial conversions.
- In the tunnels and rock caverns inside the Gotthard Mountain , the theme world “Sasso San Gottardo” was created on an area of 8,000 m2. It addresses the challenges in dealing with resources.
Pavilions, road shows
Pavilions are used for world exhibitions , international brand presentations, road shows or sponsorship appearances.
- At the Expo Milano 2015 , Nüssli realized the pavilions for the following countries and organizations: Kuwait, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, Spain, COOP, Vanke and Italian wine.
- For the Electrolux roadshow in 2011/2012, Nüssli placed the restaurant pavilion “The Cube” on the roofs of landmarks in the cities of Brussels, Stockholm, London and Milan.
production
The Nüssli production facilities for wood construction , carpentry and metal construction in Switzerland, Germany and the Czech Republic support the implementation of the project. Their tasks include static calculations, CAD visualizations and the production of components.
- The wooden sculpture "Endless Stair" consists of 15 flights of stairs and is based on the idea of the Penrose stairs by MC Escher. The sculpture was set up in 2013 in London, Milan and Zurich.
- In the Ittingen Charterhouse , Nüssli implemented an art project by the Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata . The “failure tower” was 9 m high and consisted of 170 sterling logs.
Awards and media attention
Nüssli is active in stadium construction worldwide and erects event structures with grandstands and stages, temporary exhibition and trade fair structures, pavilions and halls. Event planning, wood construction and interior fittings are also part of the company profile. The company and its projects have received international awards and prizes. Amongst other things
- for the German EXPO Pavilion 2010 with the red dot design award and the ADAM and EVA Award from FAMAB
- with the golden ISEM Award for the planning of the temporary event infrastructures at all ten venues of the Soccer World Cup in South Africa 2010
- with the Red Dot Award for the construction of the AUDI trade fair presence at the IAA Frankfurt 2013 and 2015
The company and its projects are widely received in the media because of their special design, and Nüssli is referred to as a “specialist”. In the German media, the temporary stadium for Düsseldorf was singled out in 2011 with “Never before in Germany has a football stadium of this size been built at such speed and then dismantled again after such a short time.” And Nüssli as “a leader in the field of mobile grandstand construction ”.
