The Baselworld is an exhibition of the watch and jewelery industry and is held annually in spring in Basel instead. Manufacturers from the areas of watches , jewelry , precious stones and related industries present their innovations here.

history

The first watch and jewelry fair in Basel took place in 1917 as part of the Basel sample fair . In 1931 the fair got its own pavilion . In 1963 the fair moved to a newly built pavilion. In 1972 the fair opened to foreign exhibitors, at that time from Germany, France, Great Britain and Italy, and from 1986 also for non-European exhibitors.

In 1973 the fair was named European Watch and Jewelry Fair (EUSM) . In 1983 it was renamed BASEL 83 . Each subsequent fair was given the year (from 2000 Basel2000 etc.). Since 2003 the fair has been called Baselworld .

In 2004 the trade fair had a gross exhibition area of 160,000 square meters and in 2013 of 141,000 square meters. In 2008, 106,800 people from 100 countries visited the stands of 2,087 exhibitors from 45 countries. 2,981 journalists from 70 countries visited Baselworld 2008.

A new trade fair building by architects Herzog & de Meuron was opened for Baselworld 2013 . The new building required five years of preparation and 22 months of construction and cost 430 million francs.

Baselworld 2015 had around 150,000 visitors from over 100 countries and 1,500 exhibitors. The fair was visited by more than 4,300 journalists.

In 2016, 4,400 press representatives from over 70 countries visited the fair. This year the fair had around 145,000 visitors and 1,500 exhibitors.

2017 was a year of crisis. 4,400 press representatives from over 70 countries were also present, but the number of trade visitors fell to 106,000 (−4%) with around 1,300 exhibitors. The total number of visitors was not made public. In response to the weak numbers, Baselworld will be shortened by two days in 2018.

In 2019, the trade fair management announced a new concept that is to be implemented from 2020 and the following years. Baselworld wants to develop from a classic trade fair to an experience stage and also open up to end customers.

Due to the coronavirus epidemic, Baselworld 2020 was canceled and postponed to 2021.

On April 14, 2020, the watch companies Rolex , Tudor , Chopard , Chanel and Patek Philippe announced their withdrawal from Baselworld 2021 to host an alternative watch salon in Geneva instead. A few days later, the brands of the LVMH Group, TAG Heuer , Zenith , Hublot and Bulgari followed suit . After the Swatch Group announced in 2019 that it no longer wanted to exhibit in Basel, the continued existence of the fair is now at risk.

Finally, Baselworld 2021 was also canceled.

After the cancellation of the trade fairs for 2020 and 2021, a line will be drawn under Baselworld and a new concept will be launched for 2022.

In July 2020, the new concept for the watch, jewelery and gemstone industry was presented with the name “Houruniverse”. A first event for this is to take place in April 2021.
