Hublot [ yblo (= "uglo" spoken)] ( French porthole ) is a Swiss watch manufacturer in the luxury segment with headquarters in Nyon . The company belongs to the French luxury goods group LVMH .
history
The Italian founder of the company, Carlo Crocco, began to sell watches in Italy in 1975 under the brand name Marie-Daniel-Montre (his wife's name), which already had certain similarities to the later Hublot models and was the foundation stone for the company put MDM . The Hublot brand was launched in 1980 at the Basel watch fair. The watches had rubber straps and the starter model had - similar to a porthole - a hinged cover on the dial side, which was the inspiration for the brand name. In 2004, Jean-Claude Biver joined the brand as CEO and minority shareholder, and in 2005 the Big Bang model range was presented . Hublot opened its first boutique in Paris in February 2007 . The second boutique opened in the summer of 2007 in the Hôtel Byblos Saint-Tropez . Since then, Hublot has opened more than 30 boutiques worldwide.
In 2008, Hublot and the Grisons ski manufacturer Zai developed a ski in which the surface of the ski was covered with the vulcanized natural rubber of the Hublot wristbands for the first time in ski construction . 111 copies were produced.
In April 2008, the luxury goods group LVMH acquired the Hublot brand by purchasing shares from founder Carlo Crocco and managing director Jean-Claude Biver as well as by taking over a cooperating company owned by Bivers. LVMH expanded its existing portfolio of watch brands, which also includes TAG Heuer .
As a tribute to the Antikythera mechanism, Hublot presented a modern replica of the mechanism at the Belles Montres trade fair in Shanghai in October 2011 , which could then be seen in the Musée des arts et métiers in Paris.
In January 2012 Ricardo Guadeloupe took over the position of CEO from Jean-Claude Biver.
In 2013, Hublot launched the "Big Bang $ 5 Million" (also just known as "The Hublot"), the most expensive wristwatch in the world to date.
The proportion of self-manufactured components has been and is being increased continuously.
Hublot was the official timekeeper for the second time at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . The referee board, with which the stoppage time and player numbers are displayed in the event of a change, bears the Hublot company logo at the World Cup and is based on the design of the Hublot watches. Hublot was also the official partner and timekeeper at the 2016 European Football Championship . At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Hublot was once again the official FIFA timekeeper and created special watches for the referees and customers in a limited edition smartwatch.
In 2015 and 2016, Hublot was ranked 40th among the most valuable Swiss brands by Interbrand .
