The Patinoire de Malley ( German  ice rink Malley , officially Center Intercommunal de Glace de Malley , short CIG de Malley or CIGM ) was an ice rink in Prilly , a suburb of the political municipality of Lausanne in the Swiss canton of Vaud . A small part of the stadium was in the Renens parish . It was the home stadium of Lausanne HC from the National League .

history

The arena was opened in 1984 and had an official capacity of 9,500 spectators, which, however, could be increased to 10,300 for ice hockey games. In 1992 and 2002 the European Figure Skating Championships took place in the hall. The stadium offered space for up to 12,000 visitors for other events. On April 2, 1987, the final of the national basketball championship took place in the Patinoire . The final of the Saporta Cup 1999/2000 was also held in the hall in Lausanne. In addition, the gymnastics European championships in 1990 and 2008 for men and the gymnastics world championships in 1997 were held in the hall.

In addition to the sport, concerts were held in the Patinoire de Malley.

In 2017 the ice rink was demolished and the construction of the Vaudoise aréna began in the immediate vicinity . The new home ground of Lausanne HC with 10,000 seats will host the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne. In addition , the ice hockey world championship 2020 will take place in the ice arena, next to the Zurich indoor stadium . In September 2018, Lausanne HC announced that the new multi-purpose hall will bear the sponsorship name Vaudoise Aréna , after the insurance company Vaudoise . The opening of the Vaudoise Aréna took place in September 2019.

Until the completion of the new ice rink, Lausanne HC held its training units and home games in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons in a temporary ice rink called Patinoire de Malley 2.0 . The building is 96 meters long, 66 meters wide and 17 meters high, and there is space for 6,700 spectators in the stands. It is the largest temporary ice hockey arena in the world. The Nüssli Group is responsible for the construction .

Guest sector

The guest sector of the Patinoire de Malley has been criticized several times because it is more like a «prison» than a spectator rank. The stadium was therefore also referred to as the Swiss Guantanamo in the press .
