Temporary architecture , also known as ephemeral architecture , describes architectural concepts that deal with temporary structural structures and buildings . These have a limited lifespan and useful life and are often only a temporary solution to meet an acute need . Often it is a question of mobile architectures - that is, systems that are set up at one location for a certain period of time, later dismantled and then rebuilt elsewhere.

Temporary buildings are created in various contexts, such as temporary makeshift structures in emergency or crisis situations (e.g. barracks , temporary bridges , refugee camps ), as event and festival architecture (e.g. market stalls , booths , festival tents , rides , exhibition stands), as Objects of the construction site equipment (e.g. construction containers , scaffolding, etc.), as film sets and stage architecture , as temporary earthworks ( pipe trenches , excavations, etc.), as temporary accommodation when traveling or on expeditions (e.g. camping ), etc.

Temporary architectures can be found - on the occasion of larger festivities - as early as the Baroque , for example honor gates and the like. The like that were set up along the routes of ceremonial entries and parades. Many buildings for temporary exhibitions were and will be designed as temporary . Temporary structures sometimes also serve as placeholders for later, then more solidly executed versions of the same project.

The legal term flying construction used in the German building regulations does not include all types of temporary structures.
