Marquee
A festival tent , also known as a beer tent , is a tent or tent-like building that can be easily dismantled, in which, for example, a restaurant with an entertainment program is housed at folk festivals and similar events and / or in which a party takes place. Depending on the type of event to enter can a marquee entry costs or even be free. As a rule, however, no entrance fee is charged.
description
Smaller marquees are covered with tarpaulin, while larger marquees have walls made of plywood.
At heavy events you often notice that it is dripping in a marquee even though it is not raining outside. The reason for this is moisture that condenses on the cool ceilings and dissolves when shaken.
Beer tents are particularly well-known in Baden-Württemberg , Bavaria , Westphalia and Austria . There, the annual beer tent is one of the most important events in a village. A special ceremony in a beer tent is the tapping of the keg at the opening of a folk festival, which has a long tradition at many folk festivals.
In the political debate, the beer tent is a synonym for a group of uneducated people. By means of a populist “beer cellar speech” this can usually be warmed up to right-wing issues. Hence, the accusation of delivering a beer cellar speech is also a common verbal attack on a speaker from another political party.
Some marquees have a separate compartment for the toilets. In smaller marquee tents in particular, the visitor often has to leave the tent to take care of himself. In these cases, the corresponding facilities are housed in a toilet trailer or toilet container. At events that require entry, the guest receives a stamp, similar to a discotheque , which shows the cashier or doorman that he has already paid his entrance fee. In particular, beer tents for larger events (e.g. Oktoberfest ) are playing an increasingly important role for young people. The music is often adapted for young people, especially in the evenings and on weekends.
Marquee tents are mostly at ground level. In larger marquees there is occasionally a gallery. However, safety problems are often associated with a gallery, as there is a risk, especially with unsuitable railing constructions, that people will be injured by falling objects. The floor of the installation site can serve as the floor of the marquee. More often, however, it is clad with wood, with either wooden panels or wooden slats being used. In the case of wooden slatted floors, the beer tent sets (long tables and benches) should be set up in such a way that their surfaces form a right angle with the slats, otherwise it can happen, especially at atmospheric parties, where people often dance on the beer tent sets that break the bar and a pothole that acts as a trip hazard is created.
Some larger beer tents have wooden beams on the edge. These constructions are often superfluous because they usually do not contribute to the statics of the tent. They are used by visitors as an emergency wardrobe, especially at heavier parties. Occasionally they are also used for pull-ups and other gymnastics, but this can cause problems for the staff. Occasionally, plywood panels are placed on top of these wooden frames. However, if they can be reached with their hands by people standing on the tables, they should be screwed onto them, otherwise they could be knocked down at heavy parties.
Records
The largest tent at Oktoberfest is the “Winzerer Fähndl” tent with a total of 8,450 seats. Of these 6800 inside and 2450 outside.
At the Rosenheim Autumn Festival , the Flötzinger brewery operates the Flötzinger festival tent on the Loreto meadow with space for around 9,500 people (8,500 inside and 1,000 outside). It is considered to be the largest freely erect marquee in Europe.
The longest marquee in the world is the “Engelzelt” marquee of the Fach brewery family (Crailsheimer Engelbräu) and the Hahn family at the Franconian Folk Festival in Crailsheim with a length of 127.5 meters.
