The Staffora is an approximately 65 kilometers long right tributary of the Po in the Italian province of Pavia , which runs through the southernmost part of Lombardy . It drains a section of the Ligurian Apennines through the Valle Staffora in the direction of the Po Valley and flows through the Oltrepò Pavese landscape in the lower reaches . The somewhat shorter Curone runs parallel to the Staffora just a little to the west .

course

The Staffora rises from the Fontana di San Giacomo at 1343  m slm on the northeast slope of Monte Chiappo in the municipality of Santa Margherita di Staffora . The source is next to Strada Provinciale 90 , which leads to the nearby Passo del Giovà , right on the border with the Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna regions .

From the source it initially flows southeast and only a little later reaches the Pian del Poggio district , where it crosses under the SP48 . Here it turns to the northeast and forms a wooded, narrow gorge. It passes the villages of Casale Staffora and Samboneto ( Zerba ) above the gorge , before it forms the border with the province of Piacenza in the Emilia-Romagna region from the confluence of the Fosso del Tigarello from the right to Pianostano near Cencerate . The gorge is now opening, being bridged directly by the SP48 , which now runs in the Staffora valley.

Shortly thereafter, up to the confluence of the Fosso dell'Isola, from the left it forms the municipal boundary between Santa Margherita di Staffora and Brallo di Pregola . Only a little later, the Staffora reaches the Cegni and Fego districts of the municipality of Santa Margherita, where it is bridged again by the SP48 . Here he takes up the Montagnola from the right and turns to the northwest.

This is followed by the Casanova di Sinistra on the left bank and Casanova di Destra on the right bank. Here it is bridged by the SP48 for the third time . He reaches the village of Bersanino , where the Staffora crosses the municipal boundary to Varzi . The Staffora passes Bosmenso Inferiore and Casa Rompalla , which are opposite, and Carro , which is at the confluence of the Aronchio from the right. The Staffora now flows past San Martino , Casa Boriani , Ranzi and the village of Varzi, which is on the right bank. In Varzi the river is crossed by the SP166 . Immediately after Varzi, it briefly forms the municipal boundary to Bagnaria before it runs completely into this municipality. The Crenna flows into the Staffora from the right at the Ponte Crenna fraction just a little further downstream .

It passes Casa Galeotti , Casa Massone and Torretta before reaching the village of Bagnaria, which lies at the foot of Monte Giglio . The municipality of Ponte Nizza follows on the left bank , which after the village of Spizziro expands on both sides of the river. Here the Staffora San Ponzo passes Semola and Molino del Conte before reaching the village of Ponte Nice, which is on the right bank at the confluence of the Nice . Immediately afterwards he passes the municipal boundary to Cecima , where only the Casa Zanrè fraction lies on the river. Here a bridge of the SP62 crosses the river, which connects Casa Zanrè with the village of Cecima. The municipality of Godiasco Salice Terme now borders on the right bank , while the municipality of Pozzol Groppo, which belongs to the Piedmont region, borders on a short section on the left bank .

On this section, the Staffora passes Costiola , where the SP105 bridges the river, and San Desiderio , before it runs completely back into Lombardy shortly before the village of Godiasco. At Godiasco the Ardivestra flows from the right . Shortly thereafter, the municipality of Rivanazzano Terme and the districts of Montealfeo and Salice Terme follow on the right bank , after which it runs entirely into Rivanazzano Terme. Here it reaches the Po valley near the village of Rivanazzano and is bridged by the SP461 at the same time . Immediately afterwards the Staffora crosses the municipal boundary to Retorbido , where the Rile joins from the right . A little downstream of the estuary, it forms the municipal boundary to Rivanazzano Terme on the left and Retorbido on the right bank, whereby the river passes the Voghera airport on the left bank .

The Staffora reaches the small town of Voghera , the eastern boundary of which it forms. It turns to the northeast and passes under the Alessandria – Piacenza railway as well as the SP10 and Autostrada A21 before turning again to the northwest. The Oriolo parliamentary group follows before crossing the municipal boundary to Cervesina . The river flows through the village and reaches the municipality of Zinasco .

Here the Staffora finally flows into the Po from the right at about 60  m slm just north of Cervesina.

history

The Romans probably named the river l'Iria . This is derived from Vicus Iria , the Roman name of the city of Voghera, which lies on the left bank of the river. The name Iria could also stand for the Scrivia River .

The modern river name Stàffora comes from the word Stàfula , which in turn was derived from the Lombard word Staffel . This name was first mentioned as Cascina Stàffela on a section of the river near Voghera .
