Bagno Vignoni is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of San Quirico d'Orcia in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place, formerly also called Bagni di Vignone , is 3.3 km south of the capital San Quirico d'Orcia, 50 km south-east of the provincial capital Siena and 87 km south of the regional capital Florence . The first part of the place name comes from the Italian word for thermal bath , the place addition Vignoni comes from the former capital Vignoni ( Vignoni Alto ), which is halfway between Bagno Vignoni and San Quirico d'Orcia. The place is located on the Orcia river opposite the Rocca d'Orcia district (municipality of Castiglione d'Orcia ) in the Val d'Orcia landscape at 306  meters above sea level in the immediate vicinity of the Via Francigena and the Via Cassia (here the same route). In 2001 the place had 30 inhabitants.

history

The place is mainly known for its thermal baths , which were already known to the Etruscans . For them, the place was halfway along the Etruscan road, Via Termale , which led from Chiusi to Roselle . The place was also known to the Romans who followed the Etruscans . The place was first mentioned in writing in 995 in a document sent by Hugo von Tuszien to the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Amiata . In 1170 Frederick I gave the place to Usimbaldo Tignosi, who, with Guido Medico, wrote the Carta Libertatis (a kind of declaration of independence ) in 1207 . In 1274 the Salimbeni from Siena took the place, who kept power in the place until their decline in the 1420s and which was then taken over by the city of Siena. The bridge over the Orcia to the fortress to Rocca d'Orcia (then Rocca a Tentennano ) was built in 1429. With the fall of the Republic of Siena in 1555, Bagno Vignoni also fell under the control of the Medici and went with them to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . The Amerighi family took over the Gabelle in 1592 and had the chapel of Santa Caterina built. In 1676 the place was entrusted to Flavio Chigi . His successors still have properties in the village today.

  • Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista , ancient church in which St. Catherine of Siena is said to have stayed several times from 1362 to 1367. Also contains a fresco by Ventura Salimbeni ( Resurrezione di Cristo ) and one of St. Chapel dedicated to Catherine from the 17th century.
  • Parco dei Mulini , mill park on the panoramic terrace , which is fed by the waters of the thermal bath. On the steep slope of the Orchia valley there is a cascade of four medieval horizontal wheel water mills, some of which are carved into the limestone . In between there are basins for collecting and temporarily storing the water. These mills were very important for the local economy because, unlike the other water mills in the region, they had enough water intake even during the summer drought. Due to their design, they were able to make maximum use of the amount of water available. The mills had not been used since the mid-1950s, fell into disrepair and were covered by limescale. Since 1999 the ruins have been dug up again and made accessible.
  • Ponte sull'Orcia , a former stone and today's wooden bridge at 265 meters above sea level, was built in 1429 and expanded by Baldassare Peruzzi in 1528 . Was rebuilt in 1645 and 1697 after war damage. Located approx. 1 km west of the current road bridge of Via Cassia and 3 km west of the even older Antico Ponte sull'Orcia .
  • Castello di Vignoni Alto , 11th century castle belonging to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo . In the 12th century the castle belonged to the Tignosi family from Rocca d'Orcia, and in the 14th century to the Salimbeni from Siena.
  • Chiesa di San Biagio , Romanesque church near the portal by Vignoni Alto, which contains frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries.
