The place was first documented in 766 by the Archbishop of Lucca , who mentioned the now defunct Pieve di Cappiano (also called Pieve di San Pietro ). The place was also documented as Aqua Nigra ( black water ) by Sigeric the Serious on his way from Rome to Canterbury in the year 994. The name black water refers to the color of the canal, which the water of the marshes of Fucecchio ( Padule di Fucecchio ) to the mouth of the Arno near Pontedera . At that time the first bridge over the Usciana seemed to have been in place, a short time later this was expanded and a mill was added. A pilgrim hospital run by the Cavalieri Ospedalieri di Altopascio was also built . Badia Vallombrosana Abbey was founded in the 12th century and existed until the 18th century. In 1266 the place was taken by Pisa and a short time later by Lucca . In 1281 the place surrendered to Fucecchio, since 1309 it has been a district. The bridge was destroyed by troops from Lucca in 1325 and rebuilt by the Fiorentines. The current bridge was built between February 1550 and April 1551 at the instigation of Cosimo I de 'Medici . Davide Fortini and Nicolò Pericoli ( called Tribolo ) were responsible as architects and hydraulic engineers . The bridge was severely damaged in World War II .
