Eysson is a French municipality with 116 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Eysson lies at 653  m above sea level, nine kilometers northeast of Valdahon and about 30 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the eastern edge of the plateau of Valdahon, the so-called first plateau of the Jura, in the headwaters of the Creuse at the foot of the heights of the Bois de la Côte.

The area of the 6.01 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Eysson plateau, which is an average of 650 m. It is predominantly made up of arable and meadow land, partly also of forest. The plateau is bounded in the west and east by two dry valleys and in the north by the valley of the Creuse (tributary of the Audeux ), which rises with the Source de la Venoudier . The plateau rises gradually to the southeast. The municipal area extends to the adjacent forest heights that separate the Valdahon plateau from that of Pierrefontaine. At the height of Sur le Cerf , the highest point of Eysson is reached at 740 m.

Neighboring municipalities to Eysson are Villers-Chief in the north, Domprel and Grandfontaine-sur-Creuse in the east, Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp in the south and Épenouse in the west.

history

In the 12th century a Cluniac priory was founded in Eysson, which was subordinate to the monastery of Morteau . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Eysson is a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

On January 1, 2009 there was a change in the arrondissement membership of the municipality. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.

Attractions

From the former priory church from the 12th century, the Romanesque choir has been preserved, which was integrated into the Saint-Georges church built in the late 18th century. The town center is characterized by various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 16th to 19th centuries.

With 116 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Eysson is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (176 people were still counted in 1881), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Eysson was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). The water power of the Creuse was previously used to operate a mill. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp to Landresse . Another road connection is with Grandfontaine-sur-Creuse.
