Noël-Cerneux is a French municipality with 433 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Noël-Cerneux lies at 934 m above sea level, seven kilometers northeast of Morteau and about twelve kilometers west of the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the extreme southwest of the high plateau of Maîche, at the northern foot of the Bois de Russey north of the Doube valley .
The area of the 6.36 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the high plateau of Maîche, which is on average at 930 m. It is predominantly made up of meadow and pasture land, but also shows some smaller forest areas. In a swampy lowland in the north of the municipality there is a small, artificially dammed moor lake, which is drained by the Ruisseau des Seignes . However, after a short run, this seeps into the karst subsoil. To the south, the community soil extends to the height of the Bois de Russey . Here, at 1082 m, Noël-Cerneux's highest point is reached. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the ridge forms an anticline of the Jura folds and is oriented in the south-west-north-east direction in accordance with the direction of strike of the mountains in this region.
Neighboring municipalities of Noël-Cerneux are Le Bizot in the north, La Chenalotte in the east, Villers-le-Lac and Les Fins in the south and Le Bélieu in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages Noël-Cerneux belonged to the rule of Réaumont, which was under the sovereignty of the Lords of Montfaucon , from the 15th century under that of the Counts of Montbéliard. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
On January 1, 2009 there was a change in the arrondissement membership of the municipality. Previously belonging to the arrondissement of Montbéliard , all municipalities of the canton came to the arrondissement of Pontarlier.
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Claude, which originally dates back to the early 16th century, was largely rebuilt in 1807.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Noël-Cerneux was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming). In addition, there are now various small and medium-sized businesses, including a polishing plant. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D437 road from Montbéliard to Morteau.
