Municipal administration (mairie)

Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp is a French commune with 1,591 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the canton of Valdahon in the arrondissement of Pontarlier .

geography

Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp is located 658  m above sea level, five kilometers northeast of Valdahon and about 29 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the eastern edge of the wide plateau of Valdahon, the so-called first plateau of the Jura, at the foot of the Mont de Goux.

The area of the 29.96 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the low relief high plateau of Valdahon, which averages 620 m and rises slightly to the east. It is partly made up of arable land and meadow, partly also of forest. With the exception of a few short rivulets, the plateau has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The vast forests of Forêt du Chanois and Les Anglars are located near the village . The slightly undulating western part of the municipality (the entire area of the former Villedieu-le-Camp) belongs to the Valdahon military training area, which covers a total area of 35 km².

To the east, the community area extends over a gently rising slope on the wide and predominantly wooded ridge of the Mont de Goux . This height represents an elongated ridge that is oriented towards the southwest-northeast. It separates the Valdahon plateau from the Avoudrey basin to the east. On the Mont de Goux the highest point of Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp is reached with 827 m.

Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp includes the main town, Vercel, as well as various hamlets and individual farms, including:

  • Goux ( 655  m ) on the plateau on the southern outskirts, at the foot of Mont de Goux
  • Les Granges-Rouges ( 642  m ) on the plateau south of the Forêt du Chanois
  • Les Granges-Noires ( 640  m ) on the Valdahon plateau

history

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp was already settled in Gallo-Roman times. Vercel Castle was first mentioned in a document in the 11th century. In addition to the castle, which was then a wooden structure, a settlement quickly developed that was established as a fortified town in the Middle Ages. A document from 1265 proves that it has now been converted into a fortress protected by stone walls. Vercel now formed a lordship that was dependent on the lordship of Montfaucon as a fief . In 1559 three quarters of the area (including the castle and church) were destroyed by a devastating fire. During the conquest of Franche-Comté by the troops of the French crown, the castle was again destroyed and then left to decay. Together with Franche-Comté , Vercel finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. A change of area occurred in 1818 when the previously independent Goux was incorporated into Vercel.

A Johanniterkommende had existed in Villedieu-le-Camp since the 14th century. With the establishment of the Valdahon military training area in 1907, the village had to be abandoned. The municipal areas of Villedieu-le-Camp and Vercel were not united until 1962. At the same time, Vercel changed its official name to Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp. Today Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp is a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
