View of Châtelblanc

Châtelblanc is a French municipality with 120 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Châtelblanc is 1014  m above sea level, about 32 kilometers southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The street line village extends in the Jura , on a small hill at the northern foot of the Roche, between the chains of the High Jura on a wide saddle that separates the catchment areas of the Doubs and Saine , near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the 20.79 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by parallel ridges and longitudinal hollows, which are oriented in the southwest-northeast direction according to the direction of the fold of the Jura in this region. The central part of the area is taken up by a two-kilometer-wide longitudinal basin, which forms a synclinory in geological and tectonic terms . At Châtelblanc is the saddle, which is dominated by the two rocky heads of the Roche ( 1083  m ) and the Roche Blanche ( 1075  m ) in the south . To the north-east, the terrain subsides only imperceptibly and is drained by the Cébriot to the Doubs. Towards the southwest, an approximately 80 m high step leads to the headwaters of the Brideau (tributary of the Saine).

To the south, the community area extends over the Bois Banal into the impassable, densely forested area of Mont Noir , in which hilltops and karst hollows alternate. At 1274 m, the highest point in Châtelblanc is reached here. On its north-west side, the longitudinal basin of Châtelblanc is flanked by the predominantly wooded heights of Croz Mont ( 1206  m ), which belongs to the Haute Joux system. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Neighboring municipalities of Châtelblanc are Arsure-Arsurette in the north, Chaux-Neuve in the east, Chapelle-des-Bois in the south and Foncine-le-Haut in the west.

history

The area, which was uninhabited until the 13th century, belonged to the Abbot of Saint-Claude . From this the lords of Chalon-Arlay received it as a fief and had the castle of Châtelblanc built. In 1303, Châtelblanc was granted certain freedoms to encourage settlement in the area. However, a major plague epidemic in the middle of the 14th century killed a large part of the population. The Kastlanei Châtelblanc now comprised the two villages Châtelblanc and Chaux-Neuve (including the area of the later founded Chapelle-des-Bois). Châtelblanc formed the center with the castle, while Chaux-Neuve was the church location. In 1516 the area was divided between the two communities. After 1530, the Kastlanei Châtelblanc was inherited from the Chalon-Arlay to the House of Orange-Nassau. During the Thirty Years' War the castle was occupied and destroyed by Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar in 1639 . Together with Franche-Comté , Châtelblanc came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Châtelblanc is a member of the Lacs et Montagnes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .

Attractions

The current church in Châtelblanc was built between 1858 and 1861, while the bell tower was not added until 1904 due to lack of funds. Also noteworthy is the Croix de la Combille wayside cross, which was built in the 17th century. There are no remains of the former castle that probably stood on the Roche.

With 120 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Châtelblanc is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (423 people were counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Châtelblanc was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a cheese dairy and a wood processing company. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on the D437 departmental road, which leads from Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux to Pontarlier.
