View of Les Fins

Les Fins is a French commune with 3,100 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Les Fins is located at 875  m , three kilometers northeast of Morteau and about 16 kilometers west of the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic position on the sun-exposed slope on the northeast edge of the valley of the Val de Morteau, at the eastern foot of Mont Tantillon .

The area of the 25.39 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the almost 2 kilometer wide valley of the Val de Morteau. This depression is drained south to the Doubs by the stream Tanche . To the south, the municipal area extends to the outskirts of Morteau and for a short section to the course of the Doubs.

The valley of the Val de Morteau is flanked on both sides by elongated ridges which, in geological and tectonic terms, form anticlines of the Jura and are oriented towards the southwest-northeast according to the direction of the mountains in this region. In the southeast is the wooded ridge of the Bois du Geay , which continues to the northeast to the height of Meix-Jacques and Meix-Dos-d'Ane ( 1085  m ). In the northwest rises the partly wooded, partly pastureland ridge of Mont Tantillon , on which the highest elevation of Les Fins is reached at 1160 m. The north-eastern end of the Val de Morteau is an approximately 100 m high step that leads to the plateau of the Maîche plateau. This arid high plateau averages 920 m.

In addition to the actual village, Les Fins includes various hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • Renaud-du-Mont ( 850  m ), the old town center with a church at the eastern foot of Mont Tantillon
  • Les Suchaux ( 800  m ) in Val de Morteau at the eastern foot of Mont Tantillon
  • Chez le Roi ( 819  m ) on the eastern edge of the valley
  • Les Chézières ( 802  m ) in the valley of the Val de Morteau
  • Les Frenelots ( 790  m ) in the valley of the Val de Morteau
  • Les Combes ( 757  m ) on the Tanche in the middle of the valley of the Val de Morteau
  • La Tanche ( 772  m ) on the eastern outskirts of Morteau in the Doubstal
  • Les Lavottes ( 938  m ) on the Maîche plateau
  • Les Lalliets ( 1052  m ) at the height of Meix-Jacques

Neighboring municipalities of Les Fins are Le Bélieu and Noël-Cerneux in the north, Villers-le-Lac in the east, Montlebon and Morteau in the south and Fournets-Luisans in the west.

history

The area of Les Fins was reclaimed in the 12th century by monks of the Cluniac priory of Morteau. The place name is traced back to the fact that Les Fins formed the end of the Val de Morteau against the Maîche plateau. As a result, the village belonged to the Morteau rule since the Middle Ages, which was initially under the sovereignty of the Lords of Montfaucon , from 1325 to 1507 under that of the Counts of Neuchâtel and then belonged to the Franche-Comté. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Les Fins was built around 1825 in neo -Gothic style, while an older chapel is in Renaud-du-Mont. On the plateau there are several farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries in the characteristic style of the Haut-Doubs.

With 3100 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Les Fins is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 1000 and 1200 people, a significant population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1950s, which continues to this day.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Fins was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming) and forestry. In the 20th century, thanks to its proximity to Morteau, some watchmaking companies also settled in Les Fins. Since the 1980s, several commercial and industrial zones have developed on the high plateau above Les Fins and near La Tanche on the edge of Morteau. Companies in the watchmaking industry, plastics processing, micromechanics and mechanical engineering have settled here. There are also various retail and shopping businesses. In the meantime, thanks to its attractive location, Les Fins has also turned into a place to live. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in Morteau or work as cross-border commuters in the Swiss cities of Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road D461, which leads from Besançon via Morteau to La Chaux-de-Fonds. Further road connections exist with Maîche , Villers-le-Lac and Fournets-Luisans. The narrow-gauge railway from Morteau to Maîche (opened in 1905) with a station in Les Fins was discontinued in 1952.
