Dixie Kid (* 23. December 1883 as Aaron Lister Brown in Fulton , Missouri , † 6. April 1934 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American boxer .
Professional career
The welterweight Dixie Kid, an unorthodox counter-boxer who usually provoked his opponents with low cover, turned professional in 1900. On April 29, 1904, in the first world championship match between two blacks, he won the world championship title against the legendary Joe Walcott from Barbados through a supposedly postponed fight . Walcott was disqualified in the twentieth round for no apparent reason and the referee is said to have bet on a victory for the Dixie Kid. Just two weeks later there was a tie rematch and the title stayed with Dixie.
How long he remained world champion is controversial, as he often competed against bigger boxers and Walcott called himself world champion again shortly afterwards, some historians refer to him as world champion until 1908.
He fought against Jimmy Clabby, Mike "Twin" Sullivan , Willie Lewis, Sam Langford and Georges Carpentier , among others , whom he knocked out in France in 1911 .
In 2002, Kid was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
