Joe Walcott (born March 13, 1873 in Demerara , British Guiana , † October 1, 1935 ) was a boxer from Barbados . He is not to be confused with world heavyweight champion Jersey Joe Walcott , who named himself after him.
The short black Barbados Demon turned pro in the United States in 1890 . He lost in 1897 in a duel for the lightweight title Kid Lavigne . In 1898 he lost to Mysterious Billy Smith in the fight for the world title, but in 1901 was welterweight world champion.
Because he was so superior in his weight class, he often fought against light heavyweights and heavyweights. He was initially disqualified against Dixie Kid in 1905 for no reason, but the postponement became known and there was a rematch that ended in a draw. When Dixie then boxed against fighters in his weight class again, Walcott was generally regarded as a world champion again. He boxed within a month in September 1905, drawing against Sam Langford and Joe Gans . He also beat Joe Choynski , who mostly fought as a heavyweight, and Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, in 1906 he lost the world welterweight title to Honey Mellody.
The founder of the " Ring Magazine " Nat Fleischer considered him the best welterweight of all time. In 1991, Walcott was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
