The American Jack Kornfield (* 1945 ) practiced Buddhism for many years in Thailand , Burma and India . Since 1974 he is the world as a teacher of the Buddhist Vipassana - meditation in the tradition of early Buddhist Theravada active.

After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1967 , he joined the American aid organization Peace Corps and traveled to northern Thailand, where some of the world's oldest Buddhist forest monasteries are located. There he met the Buddhist master Ajahn Chah and became his disciple as a fully ordained bhikkhu with the Pali name Sunno. In 1972 Jack Kornfield returned to the USA and founded the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts in 1975 together with Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzberg .

Kornfield became one of the most important teachers of Theravada Buddhism in the West. He devoted many years of his work to translating the Eastern spiritual teachings into an understandable form for Western people and Western society and to pass them on to life. His books, audio CDs and teachings are an inspiration to many people in the West who are interested in Buddhism. Jack Kornfield earned a PhD in clinical psychology and is a co-founder of the Spirit Rock Center in Woodacre, California , where he also lives with his wife and daughter. Some of his books became bestsellers. In German-speaking countries, Kornfield became known primarily through his book Ask the Buddha and go the way of the heart .

Kornfield is one of the scientists involved in the Mind and Life Institute's Mind and Life dialogues .
