The Mind and Life Institute is a not-for-profit organization based in Charlottesville , Virginia (USA).

The institute emerged from a series of intercultural dialogues between the 14th Dalai Lama Tendzin Gyatsho and scientists from various research areas and nationalities. The aim of the organization is to promote a dialogue between modern science and Buddhism in order to explore the possibilities and insights that can arise from such a dialogue.

Beginning

The first of the Mind-and-Life dialogues took place in 1987 in Dharamsala on the initiative of Adam Engle , Michael Sautman, Francisco Varela and Tendzin Choegyal - the younger brother of the 14th Dalai Lama . The participating scientists give a presentation on their respective subject area in their respective national language, which - if necessary - is translated into the Tibetan language by two present translators . Then there is a discussion. The dialogues are recorded, transcribed and published on video and tape . Due to the success and mutual interest that emerged from the first of these dialogues, the Mind and Life Institute was officially founded in 1990 in order to organize further such meetings at regular intervals and to publish the dialogues.

Topics and scientists of the first dialogue

The first publication was published by Jeremy Hayward and Francisco Varela under the title: Gentle Bridges: Conversations with the Dalai Lama in 1992. This book has been translated into French , Spanish , Japanese, and Chinese ; a German version was published under the title: Daring Paths of Thought: Scientists in Conversation with the Dalai Lama .

The topics and scientists of the dialogues since 1987 can be found on the company's own website.
