Snow Lion Publications was a publishing company founded in 1980 by Gabriel and Patricia Aiello in Ithaca . The publisher primarily publishes literature on the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan culture . The name Snow Lion Publications refers to the symbolism of the flag of Tibet .

The idea to found the publishing house arose in 1979 after the Aiellos met the 14th Dalai Lama Tendzin Gyatsho .

Together with the Tibetologists Sidney Piburn was begun Buddhist texts of different Tibetan Buddhist lineages of the Tibetan language or the Sanskrit into English to translate to make it as a larger - Western made available to the public -. Originally, the publishing house's authors were primarily interested in publishing texts from the various monastic traditions of Tibet . The first manuscripts were submitted by Glenn H. Mullin , Jeffrey Hopkins, and his students at the University of Virginia . Snow Lion Publications has become one of the leading publishers for the publication of Tibetan literature .

In 2012, Snow Lion Publications was acquired by Boston-based publisher Shambala Publications.
