Jeffrey Hopkins

Jeffrey Hopkins (* 1940 ) is an American Tibetologist .

Hopkins is Emeritus for Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Virginia , where he taught after 1973. He deals with Tibetan Buddhism in more than 25 books. In 1983 the influential work Meditation on Emptiness was published , in which he laid the foundations for the Gelug School.

From 1979 to 1989 he was the Dalai Lama's chief interpreter into English. He also had a lasting influence on the development of the International Tibet Independence Movement (ITIM).

In 1991 Jeffrey Hopkins fell ill with Lyme disease .
