The number of athletes that the nations are allowed to start depends on the previous season results. In addition, the host nations Germany (in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen) and Austria (in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen) will send a national group of six athletes each to the start. The following athletes were nominated:
The qualification for the opening competition of the 65th Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf took place on December 29, 2016. The competition took place on December 30, 2016.
The qualification for the second competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the so-called New Year’s competition , took place on December 31, 2016. The competition took place on January 1st, 2017.
The qualification for the third competition in Innsbruck took place on January 3rd, 2017. On January 4, 2017, the competition was carried out in one run under the most adverse conditions with strong wind, also because it is no longer possible to jump on the hill, which is not equipped with floodlights, after dark. The jury was repeatedly accused of wanting to lead the competition to a result without putting the safety of the ski jumpers first, and for this reason the competition should actually have been abandoned.
The qualification for the final fourth competition in Bischofshofen, traditionally also known as the Dreikönigsspringen , took place on January 5th, 2017. This won Andreas Wellinger with new hill record. With 144.5 m he reached the largest jump distance in the history of the Four Hills Tournament. The competition took place on January 6, 2017. During Tande's second jump, part of his ski binding came off , so that he fell back to 26th place.
After all four jumps, the points of the jumpers from all four jumps were added. The jumper with the highest number of points was the overall winner of the tour.
