Vincent Descombes Sevoie (born January 9, 1984 in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc ) is a former French ski jumper .

Career

Beginnings in the Continental Cup

Descombes Sevoie, who initially started for the ski club in Le Houches and is now active at the Club des Sports Chamonix , made his international debut in the 1999/2000 season as part of the Ski Jumping Continental Cup . However, after he only stayed in the bottom of the overall standings with only 27 points in the season, it took until January 19, 2002 in his homeland of Courchevel before he started again internationally. After narrowly missing the points in both competitions, a week later he was able to take 29th place in the individual competition at the Nordic Junior Ski World Championships in Schonach in the Black Forest . As a result, he remained without an international start for almost two years. After he failed to score points in the first three competitions at the beginning of the 2003/04 season , he won two Continental Cup points in Engelberg with 29th place after years. But after he only jumped to the rear in all other competitions of the season without success, it remained his only points.

After he remained unsuccessful in summer 2004, he started the winter season 2004/05 with poor results. Only in Brotterode in February 2005 he managed to gain points again. Descombes Sevoie surprisingly jumped to 12th place in Westby a week later and thus achieved his best individual placement in the Continental Cup. On August 6, 2005 Descombes Sevoie started for the first time in the Ski Jumping Grand Prix . At the team competition in Hinterzarten he competed with Nicolas Dessum , David Lazzaroni and Emmanuel Chedal and reached 11th place, ahead of the teams from Canada, South Korea and Kazakhstan. In the individual competition eight days later in Courchevel, he again fell well short of expectations with 51st place. So he stayed in the team of the Continental Cup.

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season Descombes Sevoie failed again in the first jumping to build on placements like in Westby in the previous season. In St. Moritz he was able to reach the points again for the first time. In February 2006 he was used for two competitions in Courchevel as part of the FIS Cup and was twice on the podium with two third places. A short time later, Descombes Sevoie jumped into the top ten for the first time in Brotterode and reached sixth place. After he was also able to score in Vikersund , he made his debut in the ski jumping World Cup on March 10, 2006 . In Lillehammer , he clearly missed the second round with 47th place. He was also unsuccessful in the Summer Grand Prix.

Promotion to the A-team

At the beginning of the 2006/07 World Cup season , Descombes Sevoie was promoted to the A-squad. In his second event of the season in Lillehammer, he managed to win his first World Cup points by finishing 24th. He also managed a good placement in the second competition on Lysgårdsbakken . In Engelberg he was able to improve again with a 21st place in the second class.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2007 in Sapporo , he reached 46th place in the individual jumping from the normal hill. After the World Championships, he missed the points in all World Cup competitions in Scandinavia. After he missed the points in the Grand Prix in all competitions in the summer of 2007, he started the 2007/08 season with a tenth place in the team competition in Kuusamo . In the following two individual competitions, he narrowly missed the points. On December 14, 2007 he was able to reach the second round for the first time, but was only 30th in Villach and thus won a World Cup point. In the following competitions Descombes Sevoie only achieved mixed results. At the Ski Flying World Championships 2008 in Oberstdorf , he was unable to qualify in individual jumping, but reached eighth place with the team. In the last individual World Cup of the season in Kuopio , he was again able to achieve a good placement with a 23rd place. Overall, he was in the end on the 58th place in the overall standings.

At the 2008 Ski Jumping Grand Prix in summer, he achieved his first points on mats. In the end, he was 47th overall with 50 points. Despite this success Descombes Sevoie was used again in the Continental Cup for the first time in September and was able to show good performances in both competitions in Oberstdorf .

Establishment in the World Cup

Vincent Descombes Sevoie in Klingenthal 2017

In his first competition at the beginning of the 2008/09 season in Kuusamo Descombes surprised Sevoie with an eighth place in the qualification, but was only able to convince with 23rd place in the competition. Also in Pragelato he convinced again in the qualification but had to be satisfied with placements in the middle field in the jumping classes with places 21 and 23. In Engelberg he achieved his best result in the World Cup with 17th place. The following Four Hills Tournament 2008/09 he finished after good placements in 37th place overall. In the following World Cups in January and February 2009 he was not able to convince, but started in all disciplines at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 . He jumped from the normal hill to 33rd, from the large hill to 41st place. In the team competition Descombes Sevoie landed with the team in eighth place. Until the end of the season he had no further World Cup points, but was able to reach the 39th place in the overall standings with 75 points. At the French Ski Jumping Championships 2009 in Chaux-Neuve Descombes Sevoie won the silver medal in the individual competition and the gold medal in the team competition.

After jumping behind the world's best in the Summer Grand Prix in the summer of 2009, he had to compete in the FIS Cup, where he didn't get past eighth place in Einsiedeln . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season , Descombes Sevoie achieved only mixed results and so found himself in the B-squad of the Continental Cup for two competitions. In the following World Cup competitions, he missed the qualification in almost every jumping. At ski flying in Oberstdorf on January 31, 2010 he was able to win points again for the first time.

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , he reached 28th place in jumping from the normal hill.

When jumping in Kuopio, Finland on March 9, 2010, he achieved his best individual result in the ski jumping World Cup with 13th place . Less than a month later, on April 3, 2010 in Les Rousses , he was able to win the French individual title for the first time in front of defending champions Emmanuel Chedal and Jason Lamy Chappuis . Before that, he was 37th at the 2010 Ski Flying World Championships in Planica , after having made another very good jump with 12th place in the qualification.

In summer 2010 Descombes Sevoie started again in the Continental Cup. He achieved two very good podium places in Lillehammer in September with a second and a third place. In the Grand Prix in Liberec and Klingenthal , he achieved good placements among the top twenty with 13th and 14th place.

Performance slump in 2010

In the 2010/11 season he started again with many missed qualifications or back placements, so that he was transferred to the Continental Cup again in December 2010. In January 2011 he switched to the World Cup again, but remained without successes and World Cup points. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 he was part of the squad again despite the lack of World Cup success due to the rather weak French national team and reached 36th place in jumping on the normal hill and 49th on the large hill. At the season finale in Planica he was able to ski flying fly to eighth place with the team after a missed individual qualification.

After a mixed summer season with changes between Grand Prix and Continental Cup, Descombes Sevoie managed to jump back into the points in the second competition of the 2011/12 season in Lillehammer. However, the only World Cup points remained in Zakopane until mid-January 2012 .

At the ski flying world championship in 2012 in Vikersund , he impressed with a very good sixth place in qualification, but had to be content with 20th place in the competition. In the individual World Cup in Lahti he found himself among the top twenty for the first time with a 17th place. However, he was unable to increase this performance until the end of the season.

Even in summer 2012 Descombes Sevoie was not able to keep consistently successful in a competition and switched again between Grand Prix and Continental Cup. It was the same for him at the beginning of the 2012/13 season, when he started in the Continental Cup after failures in the World Cup. In February he achieved another respectable success with 21st place in the last competition before the World Championships.

Performance increase from 2013

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme Descombes Sevoie surprisingly jumped to 14th place on the normal hill. In the mixed team competition, he reached fifth place with the team. He jumped from the large hill to 29th place. In the World Cup competitions after the World Championships, he again achieved good top 20 placements. He was two 14th places in Kuopio and also at the season finale in ski flying in Planica. He finished the season in 42nd place overall.

At the French Ski Jumping Championships in 2013 Descombes Sevoie won his fifth national title on the normal hill in Chaux-Neuve and silver with the team.

On August 14, 2013 he reached the mixed team competition as part of the Summer Grand Prix together with Léa Lemare , Nicolas Mayer and Coline Mattel as third place behind Germany and Japan. At the Ski Flying World Championships in Harrachov in 2014 , he finished 19th in the individual competition.

The 2014/15 season was Descombes Sevoie's most successful season to date. After some good results, including ninth place in Sapporo as the best individual placement, he achieved 28th place in the overall World Cup with 179 points. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2015 in Falun , he finished 29th on the normal hill and 34th on the large hill. With the French team, he was eighth in the mixed team competition.

He was able to confirm his performance in the World Cup in the following season . He got 204 World Cup points and repeated his overall World Cup placement 28 from the previous year. At the ski flying world championship in 2016 on the Kulm , he finished 13th, which meant the best result at this major event to date. With 230.5 meters, set up on February 14, 2016 at the World Cup jumping on Vikersundbakken , it holds the French record in ski flying.

At the start of the 2016/17 World Cup season in Ruka, Finland on November 25 and 26, 2016, he finished tenth on the first day and thus the second top ten placement of his career. The following day he was able to improve his best World Cup placement to fifth. Descombes Sevoie was also very successful later in the season. In total he reached the top ten seven times in an individual competition. With these results he also achieved his best result in the overall World Cup to date. With 386 points he was 16. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti he still missed the finals in all three competitions. In the individual competition on the normal hill he came in 41st place and on the large hill in 33rd place. In the mixed team competition, he was tenth.

Another drop in performance from 2017

After the best season of his career so far, there was a significant drop in performance in the 2017/18 season. In the World Cup he reached the final round only once, place 27 in Nizhny Tagil remained his best result of the season. At the Ski Flying World Championships 2018 in Oberstdorf he only reached 40th place in the individual competition. This meant his worst performance at a ski flying World Cup since 2008. Despite his lack of performance, he took part in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in February 2018 . He started in both individual competitions and also survived qualification in both competitions. But then he missed the final round with 43rd place on the normal hill and 50th and thus last place on the large hill .

On June 2, 2018, he announced his retirement from active competitive sports.
