After the area of today's city was originally settled by Indians of the Sauk , Fox and Winnebago , after the end of the Black Hawk War the Indian population declined.
After the region had been settled mainly by immigrants from Norway since 1848, Ole T. Westby opened a general store on the site of today's town in 1867. The developing settlement was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1896 and elevated to the status of city in 1920.
In memory of the Norwegian heritage of the city is presented annually to the Syttende May the National Day of Norway committed.
