The 5th Four Hills Tournament 1956/57 began with jumping in Oberstdorf on December 29th and was a guest in Innsbruck the next day, December 30th . On January 1st, the traditional New Year's competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen followed , with 3 competitions being held in just 4 days. Then there was a longer break until the final competition in Bischofshofen on January 6th . Polish jumpers competed for the first time. The Finns competed without their 1956 Olympic champion Antti Hyvärinen and the 1954/55 tour winner Hemmo Silvennoinenon. Nevertheless, they were the overall winner with tour newcomer Pentii Uotinen. Of the other tour winners, only last year's winner Kamenski from the Soviet Union competed.

Oberstdorf

For the third time in a row, in front of 10,000 spectators, the Finnish jumpers achieved a double victory in the opening competition on the Schattenbergschanze. This time, Pentti Uotinen, who had not appeared so far, won ahead of the Olympic wide Aulis Kallakorpi. Third place was firmly in German hands twice with Werner Lesser and Toni Brutscher. Helmut Recknagel fell in the first round and was only 35th. The sporting value of jumping was reduced by the lack of Soviet jumpers, who were the tour winners when they participated for the first time last year. They were refused entry by the German authorities.

Contrary to the normal order, there was a jump in Innsbruck the following day. The Soviet jumpers starting for the first time surprised with the first two podium places. With 4th place, Koba Zakadze completed the result of his team. While the Finns did not intervene in the decision this time, the German jumpers showed a good team performance with places 3, 4 and 6. For the first time, the only 19-year-old Helmut Recknagel was able to draw attention to himself during the tour with place 6. In the overall standings, too, the strength of the German jumpers was evident after 2 competitions. After the leading Finn Pentii Uotinen, Max Bolkart with 3.5 and Werner Lesser with 5.5 points were still very promising in the race.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

After protests, also with the support of the West German Ski Association, the Soviet jumpers were allowed to start in Garmisch in front of 30,000 spectators. And they also won the duel with the Finns in the New Year's competition. However, Nikolai Kamenski won by a very thin 0.3 points ahead of Eino Kirjonen. Nikolai Schamow set a new hill record in the second round with 91.5 m. The second highest width was 83.5 m. A total of 4 Soviet jumpers were placed in the top ten. Of the German jumpers only Max Bolkart and Harry Glaß were able to keep up with the leaders in 7th and 8th place. Nevertheless, the results were sufficient for Bolkart and Lesser to maintain their preliminary podium positions. The Finn Kirjonen had made up ground and was already just behind Lesser.

Bischofshofen

On Epiphany there was another Finn on the podium. Eino Kirjonen relegated the Soviet jumpers Kamenski and Schamow to the other podium places with a new hill record of 94 m and a gap of almost 10 points. The German jumpers showed a strong performance with places 4 to 7. The promisingly placed Max Bolkart lost in 11th place with only 204.5 points, believe it or not, 26 points to the winner of the day Kirjonen, so that he pushed him from second place in the overall standings.

Total status

Despite a brilliant performance by Eino Kirjonen in Bischofshofen, it wasn't quite enough for the overall victory in the end. With an eighth place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze, Pentii Uotinen saved a lead of 0.7 points for winning the tour. The German jumpers were able to place themselves in the top ten with 5 athletes, whereby Helmut Recknagel built a better overall ranking with his fall in Oberstdorf. In the meantime there were even two German jumpers in the podium. In the end, however, at least Max Bolkart achieved the first podium placement in the overall tour for a German jumper with 3rd place. The performance of the Soviet athletes was not taken into account due to the lack of jumping in Oberstdorf. If you only use the points of the last 3 competitions purely arithmetically, the order would have been Kirjonen, Kamenski, Schamow, Uotinen. So one can assume that the overall ranking would have looked different without the entry ban to Oberstdorf.
