Walter Steinegger (born November 5, 1928 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian ski jumper .

Steinegger was part of the Austrian squad for the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo and jumped from the normal hill to 14th place. From 1953 on, Steinegger jumped in the Four Hills Tournament . In his first competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on January 1, 1953, he was able to jump into the top ten with 9th place. In the end, he finished 8th in the overall ranking of the 1953 Four Hills Tournament . On the second day of the competition (March 10, 1956) at the ski flying week on the Kulm , he came fifth. He played his most successful tours between 1956 and 1958. After he finished the Four Hills Tournament in 1956/57 in 5th place in the overall ranking, he was able to repeat this success a year later. In addition, he was able to jump on the podium for the first and only time in his career on December 29, 1957 with third place in Oberstdorf . On January 1, 1958, he narrowly missed this place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and came in fourth. He finished the ski jumping on March 9th at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 14th place. He ended the Four Hills Tournament 1958/59 outside of the rankings. A year later, however, he was able to jump to 8th place in the overall tournament at the Four Hills Tournament in 1959/60 . Due to this success he was again part of the Austrian squad at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley . He finished 16th on the normal hill. In the following years, Steinegger took part in the Four Hills Tournament several times without success before he ended his active ski jumping career after the Four Hills Tournament in 1962/63 .
