Ferdl Kerber (born May 28, 1925 in Ehrwald ; † May 21, 1977 there ) was an Austrian ski jumper .

Career

Kerber started skiing as a child. In terms of competition, however, he did not begin Nordic skiing until after the Second World War , when he served as a soldier. A short time later he specialized in ski jumping.

It was not until the age of 26 that Kerber jumped successfully internationally for the first time in the 1953 Four Hills Tournament . In the end, he finished 13th overall. A year later at the Four Hills Tournament in 1953/54 he again achieved this placement, with 12th place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen being his best individual result on the tour to date. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1954 , which took place a short time later in Falun , Kerber jumped to 39th place in the individual. He had previously achieved third place in the Austrian championship. After good individual results in FIS jumping he reached the Four Hills Tournament 1954/55 at the end of the 15th place in the overall ranking. In the 1955 Swiss Spring Tour , he achieved a top 10 placement in Arosa .

When jumping on the Olympic hills for the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, he reached eighth place in 1955 and was second best Austrian behind Albin Plank . At the Four Hills Tournament 1955/56 Kerber could no longer build on the performances of the previous years. His best individual result was a 30th place. He could not place himself in the overall standings. He also missed the qualification for a starting place at the Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo . Only for the following season 1956/57 he was able to achieve better performances again. So he reached the 24th place in the overall ranking at the Four Hills Tournament 1956/57 . At the Kongsberg Cup in Zell am See , he reached fifth place shortly afterwards in the individual competition and won the team competition with the team.

Kerber played his last season in 1957/58. Under the new coach Josef Bradl , the now 32-year-old was no longer able to prevail against the youngsters. After he missed the qualification for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 , he ended his active ski jumping career.

After his career ended, Kerber worked on his own farm in the summer and worked as a ski instructor in his hometown Ehrwald in the winter. He married his partner Anni and had two daughters with her. In 1977 Kerber died of a serious illness at the age of 52.
