Werner Lesser (born August 22, 1932 in Schmalkalden ; † January 15, 2005 in Brotterode ) - also known as Werner Lesser II because of several identical names in Brotterode - was a ski jumper in the GDR .
Career
Werner Lesser initially started for Stahl Brotterode when he was active . There he took part in the annual international ski jumping on the Inselbergschanze and twice improved the hill record. In 1952, 1953, 1957 and 1961 he was GDR champion in special jumping. He had his best international placement on March 9, 1956 as the winner on the Kulm ski jump with a width of 122 meters, where he improved the old record from 1953 with Sepp Bradl (120 m); he won the day on March 9th, finished second on March 10th and secured overall victory on the final day (March 11th). Together with Harry Glaß and Helmut Recknagel , he shaped ski jumping in the GDR in the 1950s.
Before joining the German People's Police, Lesser worked as an accountant in the Thuringian ball bearing factory in Zella-Mehlis . In 1958 he became a candidate for the SED . In 1958 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze for his sporting achievements . He received this medal in 1974 for his services as a coach.
From 1962 to 1991, Lesser was involved in the recruiting of young ski jumpers as a base trainer at the training center in Brotterode. The Brotterode ski jumping arena has had his name since October 9, 2009.
