Władysław Tajner (born September 17, 1935 in Goleszów , † February 27, 2012 in Cieszyn ) was a Polish ski jumper and ski jumping coach.

Career

International career

Tajner began his career as an alpine ski racer. In 1951 he won the Polish junior championship in giant slalom . A little later he switched to the special jumpers, where he won his first title at the Polish Championships in 1956. He then got a starting place for the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . Despite the fact that he was injured by falling down a staircase a short time before the games, he started from the normal hill and reached 16th place after jumps on 74 and 76.5 meters.

In December Tajner started in the Four Hills Tournament 1956/57 . Already at the opening jump on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf he clearly demonstrated his strength and reached 15th place. He also finished 15th on the Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck . He achieved his best individual result of the tour at the New Year's show in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . He jumped to 10th place on the Great Olympic Hill. After another good 20th place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen , he finished the tour in ninth place in the overall ranking.

A little later, Tajner showed a mixed performance on the fourth Swiss jumping tour. In Arosa he jumped three meters further than the hill record at that time, but fell on landing. After completing the tour, he won his second national title at the Polish Championships. In the same year he set a new Polish record for ski flying in Planica with 114 meters, which lasted for several years.

At the Four Hills Tournament in 1957/58 that followed in the winter , he was unable to match the previous year's performance and, after mixed jumping, only reached 29th place overall. At the Polish championships a short time later, however, he again proved his class and secured his third national title in a row. However, it also became his last title. He was only able to win bronze twice in 1959 and 1960. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 , he jumped from the normal hill to 59.5 and 64.5 meters and thus reached 22nd place.

In 1959 he started ski flying on the Kulm in Tauplitz . He fell while flying at 110 meters and sustained serious injuries. Nevertheless he still reached the 12th place. At the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , Tajner started again from the normal hill. With jumps of 78.5 and 79.5 meters, he reached rank 31st. Before that, Tajner had broken the meniscus in his knee during training , but started the competition anyway.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1962 in his adopted home Zakopane , Tajner did not get a starting place. With the start of the Four Hills Tournament 1962/63 he finally gave his international farewell. He finished the tour again in 30th place overall. His best individual result was 23rd in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

After the active career

In 1971 Tajner moved to Austria , where he took a job at the ski manufacturer Atomic in Altenmarkt im Pongau . He moved to the United States just a year later . There he lived in Carson City , Nevada for 17 years and worked as an elevator engineer. In 1988 he returned to Poland and took over the job of junior coach at Club Beskid Brenna.

Tajner, who was married twice, had Polish and US citizenship and lived in Ustroń until his death . He was the uncle of the successful jumper and trainer Wojciech Tajner . His brother Leopold Tajner , who achieved international success as a Nordic combined skier, is Tomisław Tajner's grandfather .
