The Nordic Combined team competition at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang was held on February 22, 2018 at the Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Center . Ten countries took part in the competition.

The German season with Eric Frenzel , Vinzenz Geiger , Fabian Rießle and Johannes Rydzek won overwhelmingly with almost a minute ahead of the season from Norway, consisting of Espen Andersen , Jørgen Graabak , Jarl Magnus Riiber and Jan Schmid . Austria secured third place with the quartet Wilhelm Denifl , Bernhard Gruber , Lukas Klapfer and Mario Seidl . No relay from Switzerland or Liechtenstein took part.

Event format

The team competition, like all competitions in Nordic Combined, consists of ski jumping and cross-country skiing . The team competition has always been held from the large hill since the 2002 Winter Olympics and is similar to the team competition of ski jumpers. The only difference is that each athlete only has one jump instead of two.

After the jump, the points achieved by the athletes of a team from one jump are converted into time delays using the Gundersen method . In the relay race that follows, the participants of a team go one after the other on the 5 km cross-country ski run, with the first starter starting with the corresponding time lag on the leading team. In the end, the team whose final runner reaches the finish line first wins.

Starting field

A total of ten countries qualified for the competition, each of which had registered four Nordic combined athletes for the competition:

Before the first change, it was initially a four-way battle at the top. After that, however, the German relay team was able to break away and by the third change they had a lead of more than a minute over the pursuers. Before the third change, the three-way battle for silver and bronze developed into a duel for these two medals, as the Japanese relay team had to let go of the relays from Austria and Norway due to the increased tempo of the relay teams. In the final round, the Norwegian relay was able to break away from the relay from Austria and secure the silver medal.

With the victory of the German relay, for the first time since the 2002 Winter Olympics , a country managed to win all gold medals in Nordic combined.
