Raffaele Buzzi (born July 17, 1995 in Tolmezzo ) is an Italian Nordic combined skier .

Career

Mostly unsuccessful years in the youth field

Buzzi made his international debut as a ski jumper at the Nordic Ski Games of the OPA 2009 in Baiersbronn , where he was unable to catch up with the best of his age group. He completed his first competition as a combined athlete in October 2009 in the Alpine Cup , but here too it was initially only enough for the lower ranks. In the following years Buzzi competed regularly in the Alpine Cup, but could not achieve any successes worth mentioning. At the European Olympic Winter Youth Festival 2011 in Liberec , he appeared again as a special jumper, but had no chance either individually or with the team. Although there were still no results in the top thirty in the Alpine Cup, Buzzi traveled to the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck . He was able to live up to the nomination, however, as his fifth place in the individual according to the Gundersen method was booked as a success. In addition, he finished tenth in the mixed team jumping together with Veronica Gianmoena and Daniele Varesco . A few weeks later he made his debut at home in Predazzo in the Continental Cup , but had to leave without winning a point.

After Buzzi was able to reach the points in the Alpine Cup more regularly in the 2012/13 season, he was used at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2013 in Liberec. However, the competitions were disappointing for the Italian, so that he only finished in the lower ranks in the two individual competitions as well as with the relay. In January 2014, he ran into the top 10 in the Alpine Cup for the first time, and even narrowly missed the podium in Predazzo as fourth. With this increase in performance in his back, he traveled to the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2014 in Val di Fiemme . Compared to the previous year, Buzzi showed a clear improvement, but the ranks 14 and 17 could not satisfy the individual. With the season he lined up in eighth place. At the end of August 2014, he qualified for a race in the Grand Prix for the first time in Oberstdorf , but ultimately did not get past 50th place. Also in winter 2014/15 Buzzi mainly competed in the Alpine Cup. Only at the end of January 2015 did he face the international competition in the Continental Cup in Planica . For the first time he managed to jump into the points. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2015 in Almaty , she only found Buzzi in midfield.

First World Cup points and participation in the 2017 World Cup

At the beginning of winter 2015/16, Buzzi was part of the Italian Continental Cup team for the first time . In the course of the season he improved and was ultimately able to regularly win points. His best result of the season was the 14th place in Planica. In mid-February 2016 he was called up to the World Cup team, but on his debut in Lahti he crossed the finish line just five minutes behind in 41st place. On the second day of the competition in southern Finland, Buzzi and Lukas Runggaldier finished twelfth in the team sprint after a poor jump performance and the fourth-best mileage. On the final World Cup weekend in Schonach , he started for the first time in the Italian relay, with which he was sixth. The following day he won his first three World Cup points, so that he and Kail Piho took 57th place in the overall standings . A week later he confirmed his form with sixth place in the Gundersen singles at the Continental Cup season finale in Klingenthal .

The following winter , Buzzi struggled in the World Cup, so that he started again in the second-rate Continental Cup in February. Nevertheless, he was in the Italian squad for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti . In his only appearance in the Gundersen singles on the normal hill, he finished a respectable 37th place.

Participation in the Winter Olympics

In the summer of 2017, Buzzi won his first Grand Prix points, where he drew attention in particular with his strong mileage. At the start of the 2017/18 World Cup season at the end of November in Ruka , he also achieved the points in the sprint. During the rest of the season he could not win any more World Cup points and also missed top positions in the Continental Cup. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he could not call up any better performances, so that he reached places 40 and 34 in the individual as well as eighth place with Lukas Runggaldier, Aaron Kostner and Alessandro Pittin .

Since summer 2018

The course of the Grand Prix 2018 clearly revealed Buzzi's strengths and weaknesses. He won the best runner trophy , but ultimately only got 50 points, which earned him 28th place in the overall standings. Even in winter Buzzi showed good mileage, but weak jumps prevented further World Cup points. Only at the mass start in Lillehammer at the beginning of December did he finish in the top 30. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld , he took 32nd place in the Gundersen individual on the large hill. Things went a little better for him on the normal hill when he crossed the finish line in 27th place. With the Italian season he was seventh. He finished the season in Nizhny Tagil with fifth place in the mass start and sixth in the Gundersen singles over 15 kilometers in the Continental Cup .

In summer 2019 , Buzzi defended his title as best roller ski runner. Since his jumping performance had not improved, however, it was only enough to earn seventeen Grand Prix points. In mid-December 2019, on the opening weekend of the Continental Cup in Park City , he made it onto the podium for the first time in second place in the mass start. In the further course of the season he competed in the World Cup , where he was usually far behind after the jump round. It was not until the 15 kilometer competition as part of the Nordic Combined Triples in Seefeld at the beginning of February that he finished 26th and won ten World Cup points due to the peculiar points awarded at the weekend. During the rest of the season he competed successfully in the Continental Cup, in the overall ranking of which he was tenth.
