In biochemistry, lipidomics refers to research into the investigation of lipids . Lipidomics is a branch of metabolomics .

In lipidomics, systems biology methods of high throughput and bioinformatics are used, but also mass spectrometry , NMR spectroscopy , fluorescence spectroscopy and dual polarization interferometry . The name was coined in 2003 by X. Han and J. Gross.
The lipidomics methods usually begin with an extraction of the lipids with a mixture of chloroform and methanol according to Bligh and Dyer from 1959. The lipids are then often separated by HPLC .
