Lessing started at all world championships from now until 2007. Again in the summer biathlon, he started again from 2000 at the world championships, which were held in Khanty-Mansiysk . After a sixth place in the sprint and a fifth place in the pursuit, he won bronze with Indrek Tobreluts , Janno Prants and Dimitri Borovik with the relay.

In Salt Lake City , Lessing started at the Olympic Games in 2002 . Here his best result was an eleventh place with the relay. It was not until the 2005/06 season that Lessing achieved World Cup points for the first time. In Östersund he was twelfth in the sprint. However, he was able to achieve better results several times with the relay. His highlight of the 2006 season was his participation in the Olympic Winter Games in Turin , where Lessing, however, again remained without any noteworthy results. Things went better a year later at the 2007 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz. Here Lessing was 23rd in the individual and eleventh in the relay.
Roland Lessing made it into the top ten in the World Cup for the first time in the 2008/2009 season in Trondheim. In the sprint he is 10th. He achieved his first podium in 2009 in Pokljuka. Surprisingly, he took second place in the pursuit with an error-free shooting performance, having already finished 16th in the sprint.

Roland Lessing started at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games , his best result was 62nd place in the sprint. With the season, Lessing was 14.
