Benjamin Weger (born October 5, 1989 in Geschinen , Wallis ) is a Swiss biathlete .

Career

Benjamin Weger is a student and lives in Geschinen. The athlete of the SC Obergoms , trained by Markus Segessenmann, began biathlon in 2006. A year later he was promoted to the Swiss national team. Towards the end of the 2005/06 season he made his international debut as part of the Junior European Cup. In Gurnigel he was in the top ten for the first time in his fourth race, a mass start. In 2007 he took part in the Junior World Championships in Martell . In the individual, Weger was 15th, in the sprint on 13th and in the pursuit on 11th place. In 2008 he was seventh in the individual, fourth in the sprint and fifth in the pursuit in Ruhpolding . Between the two Junior World Championships, he was among the top ten in the Junior European Cup several times during the season. The 2008 European Junior Championship in Nové Město na Moravě also went well for the young Swiss. The worst result was the ninth place in the individual, in the sprint he won the bronze medal and missed another in the pursuit. Towards the end of the season he won a pursuit race of the Junior European Cup in Cesana San Sicario after a second place in the sprint. In the summer Weger competed in the junior competitions as part of the Summer Biathlon World Championships 2008 in Haute-Maurienne and won silver in the sprint behind Martin Fourcade , in the pursuit he only had to admit defeat to Jakov Fak .

Since the 2008/09 season Weger no longer starts in the juniors. He made his senior debut in Obertilliach as part of the IBU Cup . In his first race, an individual, the Swiss only narrowly missed a top ten finish in eleventh place. At the beginning of 2009 he made his debut in the Biathlon World Cup in Oberhof . He contested his first race with the Swiss relay and finished ninth. He had his first use in a single race two days later and was 85th of the sprint race. In the 2009/2010 season Benjamin Weger finished 19th in the sprint in Ruhpolding and won his first points in the World Cup. Benjamin Weger took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics. His best result was 55th place in the individual. With the relay he finished 9th.

In the 2010/11 season Weger achieved his best result so far on December 16, 2010 with second place in the Pokljuka singles . It was also the best result for a Swiss biathlete.

At the start of the 2011/2012 Biathlon World Cup , Weger had his best start to the season so far in Östersund with 13th place in the sprint and seven in the pursuit. In Hochfilzen he improved again with two third places in the sprint and in the pursuit. He is the first Swiss in this sport who could achieve more than one podium in his career.

In November 2012 Weger received the Oberwalliser Sport Award as Sportsman of the Year , one month later the award as Swiss Young Sportsman of the Year .

After a mixed start to the 2012/2013 Biathlon World Cup , Weger achieved his first top ten position of the season in the sprint in Oberhof at the beginning of January 2013 with ninth place. In the subsequent pursuit, he rose another four positions. In both races he made only one shooting error.
