Karl-Heinz "Charly" Doll (born January 9, 1954 in Bühlertal ) is a German running athlete , cook and author.

Running career

Charly Doll started his career at the age of 24. He achieved his first successes as a runner for the LG Hohenfels, later for the Freiburg FC , the LC Breisgau and the SV Kirchzarten .

In 1985 he won his first mountain run in Bühlertal . In 1986 he set a world record in the twelve-hour race that remained unchallenged for years. In 1986 and 1987 he was German runner-up, in 1988 German champion in mountain running, again in Bühlertal. In 1989 he defended his title in Müllheim . In 1986 he had already won the bronze medal in the individual classification and bronze with the national team at the Sondrio Mountain Running World Cup , and a year later team silver in Lenzerheide . Other successes included winning the international Swiss Alpine Marathon in Davos , a 67 km run with plus / minus 2300 meters difference in altitude, and the Comrades Marathon in South Africa, as well as a world record in 12-hour cross-country skiing. In 1990 he became German champion in the 100 km run with a world best time of 6:29:39 hours.

After a health-related phase without success, he won the Comrades Marathon again in 1993.

training

According to his own statements, Doll trained more intuitively and without training plans until 1990 and took part in competitions, as his profession allowed:

“After the 100 km run, I could hardly walk for a week, let alone run. Despite all the warnings, I took part in the Schluchseelauf eight days later. That was of course total nonsense, the biggest mistake I could make. After that I was constantly dealing with injuries and illnesses. The immune system was attacked, a consequence of the too short regeneration time "

From 1990 onwards, he refrained from hard pace runs during preparation and integrated heart rate monitors and lactate value controls into his planning:

"I used to train as I enjoyed it [...] I no longer have hard speed units in training. In competitions, not only the competition but also the heart rate monitor determine my pace. If the values are too high, I sometimes get out. "

Others

In addition to his running career, Doll worked continuously as a cook. Since 1979 he has been head chef and manager of large hotel kitchens. With his wife Friederike he runs the seminar hotel "Sonnenhof" near Hinterzarten . In 2002 he was Olympic chef for the German national ski jumping team with Sven Hannawald . With Herbert Steffny he has been organizing seminars for endurance athletes and cooking courses for years. Together with Steffny and Ulrich Pramann, he wrote the book “Perfect Running Training - The Nutrition Program”.

Doll lives with his family in Breitnau . His children are the biathlete Benedikt Doll and the mountain runner Stefanie Doll .
