Ilijan Penew ( Bulgarian Илиян Пенев ; born April 17, 1987 in Saparewa Banja , People's Republic of Bulgaria ) is a Bulgarian biathlete .

Ilijan Penew ran his first international race since 2008 in the Junior European Cup. The first international championship was the 2008 Summer Biathlon European Championships in Bansko . He finished 17th in the sprint and 22nd in the mass start race. He has been competing in the IBU Cup since the 2008/09 season . He contested the first race in Obertilliach , where he was 75th in a sprint. Penew achieved first single-digit results in Bansko in 2009 with sixth in the sprint and eighth in the pursuit. The first major event in winter was the 2009 European Biathlon Championships in Ufa . At the continental championships in Russia, the Bulgarian was 48th in the individual, 46th in the sprint and together with Martin Bogdanow , Vladimir Iliew and Krassimir Anew ninth in the relay race.
