Selina Gasparin (born April 3, 1984 in Samedan ) is a Swiss biathlete .

Selina Gasparin switched from cross-country skiing to biathlon in 2004 . After joining the Swiss Ski Association , she made her debut in the World Cup in 2005 and was promoted to the national team in 2010 . In addition to her male teammates, she was the only biathlete from Switzerland and multiple national champion to compete in the World Cup for several years. She celebrated her greatest successes to date with victories in the sprints in Hochfilzen and Le Grand-Bornand in December 2013 and the individual silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics . Since 2010 , her younger sister Elisa has had a permanent place in the highest competition series, while the youngest sister Aita was promoted to the B-squad at the end of the 2014 season. The Gasparin sisters mostly occupy three positions in the Swiss women's relay.

Career

Career as a cross-country skier

Selina Gasparin began her career as a cross-country skier. At the Junior World Championships in 2002 in Schonach in the Black Forest , she was 32nd over five kilometers and 40th in the sprint. A year later she reached the 24th place over five kilometers at the Junior World Championships in 2003 in Sollefteå, Sweden , and 25th in the mass start race over 15 kilometers. At the Winter Universiade 2005 in Innsbruck and Seefeld in Tyrol she was 30th in the sprint.

But even during her biathlon career, Selina Gasparin competed sporadically in cross-country skiing. In 2013 she took part for the first time in a World Cup race and in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Fiemme Valley , Italy , when she was 31st over ten kilometers. Your best World Cup placement was an 18th place at the Sprint World Cup in Lenzerheide on December 30, 2017.

Beginnings as a biathlete (2004 to 2009)

Gasparin made his debut in the 2004 European Cup and was 16th in the individual, tenth in the sprint and 13th in the pursuit. In early February 2005, she won the Swiss sprint championship and the runner-up in the mass start. Further national titles were added in the following years. Due to the good results she was used at the Junior World Championships in 2005 in Kontiolahti , but did not reach any top placements. On 26 November 2005, she took the sprint in Ostersund for the first time at a World Cup race in part and was ranked 86th then launched it first again in the European Cup and the European Championships in Langdorf , where good places in the sprint (12) and in the Persecution (14th) proved. The home European cup in Gurnigel was also successful, where she came second in the sprint and mass start and third in the pursuit. She finished her next World Cup races in the sprint races of Pokljuka and Oberhof with 69th place.

Beginning of February 2007 launched Gasparin in Antholz as the first athlete from Switzerland at Biathlon World Championships . With 44th place in the individual she achieved a respectable success in her still young career with overall mixed results. In January 2009 she won World Cup points for the first time in Oberhof as 29th in a sprint race.

Establishment in the World Cup (2009 to 2012)

In the following season Gasparin qualified in the same place by a 23rd place in the sprint as the first Swiss biathlete for the Olympic Winter Games . In January 2010 she achieved an outstanding result in an individual with fifth place in Antholz, which she repeated in the sprint the following year. Two months later, another top ten result followed with ninth place in the sprint at Holmenkollen in Oslo . At the 2010 Biathlon Mixed Relay World Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk , a mixed Swiss relay was used for the first time. As the first runner, Gasparin reached 13th place out of a total of 18 nations together with her sister Elisa as well as Benjamin Weger and Thomas Frei .

Starting out of competition, Gasparin won the individual race at the German Championships in September 2010 . Her best result in the 2010/11 World Cup season was the sprint in Antholz on January 21, 2011 with fifth place. With this result, she secured her first participation in a mass start race, which she finished eighth two days later. On March 9, 2011, she finished 13th in the singles of the 2011 World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk. With seventh place in the pursuit at the season finale in Oslo, she completed her World Cup record of top ten placements in all four individual disciplines.

In March 2011 Gasparin won the 58th International Customs Ski Competitions in Ulrichen, Switzerland, in a single run over five kilometers ahead of the German Nicole Fessel . At the end of December 2011, she took part in the World Team Challenge in Gelsenkirchen for the first time and finished ninth together with her teammate Benjamin Weger . In the 2011/12 season she reached 14th place in the sprint in Oslo in early February 2012. After the Swiss Mixed Relay placed in the top ten for the first time at the start of the World Championships in Ruhpolding , Gasparin posted the best individual result in title fights in the sprint on March 3, 2012 with faultless shooting and twelfth place. The next day she confirmed the performance with 13th place in the pursuit race. At the side of her sister Elisa and the two juniors Irene Cadurisch and Patricia Jost , she crossed the finish line in the first Swiss women's relay at a major event as the 21st of 26 nations that started.

Development of the women's team (2012/2013)

At the end of April 2012, Gasparin took part in the Patrouille des Glaciers and, together with ski mountaineers Caroline Kilchenmann and Victoria Kreuzer, finished sixth out of 26 women's teams that started. In the cross-country skiing competition as part of the German Championships on September 22, 2012, she was fourth. Right at the start of the 2012/13 World Cup season in Östersund , she achieved the best result of the season with two shooting errors and fourth place in the individual. On December 9, 2012, for the first time in the history of international biathlon sport, three sisters, Selina, Elisa and Aita Gasparin, were represented in a season in Hochfilzen , which was completed by C-team junior Ladina Meier-Ruge . At the World Cup debut, the women's relay reached 16th place out of 22 nations started. With ninth place in the sprint in Pokljuka and seventh place in the mass start in Ruhpolding, two more top ten results followed. In mid-February 2013, Gasparin delivered at the World Championships in Nové Město na Moravě in individual with 20th place, her best performance of the World Cup. In addition, the women's relay, as 13th of 24 classified nations, made it a premiere at world championships. Switzerland secured 16th place in the nation ranking of the last two title fights and the four quota places at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, which the association was aiming for .

Gasparin then completed a world cup race in cross-country skiing for the first time in her career . On February 17, 2013 she came in 21st place at the World Cup in Davos over 10 km freestyle and was then selected by the association for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme . There she missed the top 30 in the same discipline by a position almost two minutes behind the winner Therese Johaug . At the last World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, she finished seventh with just one shooting error in the final mass start and overall the fourth top ten placement this season. In the Women's Nations Cup, Switzerland was among the top 20 for the first time and thus had three starting positions in the following season. At the end of the season Gasparin was again national double champion and, after finishing second in the mass start over five kilometers, she won the 60th International Customs Ski Competitions in Galtür in the subsequent night sprint.

First World Cup victories and Olympic silver (2013/2014)

In the spring of 2013, Gasparin started working with a mental trainer to better cope with the psychological challenges in the shooting range with the help of hypnotherapy . During the preparation for the season in September 2013 she finished third in the international ranking behind Franziska Preuss and Karin Oberhofer in the mass start of the German Championships in Ruhpolding. At the beginning of the 2013/14 World Cup season on December 6, 2013, she celebrated her first World Cup victory in the sprint in Hochfilzen and at the same time the first triumph of a Swiss and the first podium place for women in this sport. A week later she also won the sprint race of the third World Cup in Le Grand-Bornand and in the meantime took over the red jersey of the discipline leader. In the subsequent pursuit, she achieved the best career result in this discipline, finishing sixth. At the beginning of January 2014, the women's relay with the three Gasparin sisters and Irene Cadurisch as the final runner in Ruhpolding fulfilled the standard required by the association for participation in the Winter Olympics with tenth place. After two top 20 placements in the sprint and in the pursuit, Gasparin won the silver medal in the individual race on February 14, 2014. After an error-free shooting, she crossed the finish line more than a minute behind Olympic champion Darja Domratschawa and thus ensured another premiere in Swiss biathlon. In addition, three athletes from the same family competed in an Olympic competition for the first time, who later came ninth in the final relay with Irene Cadurisch. After returning from Sochi, Gasparin won the 15th women's run at the Engadin Ski Marathon in early March 2014 . After two more top ten results in Pokljuka and Kontiolahti, she achieved a personal record and best results in four discipline World Cups at the end of the season with eleventh place in the overall World Cup. Thanks to the good team performance, Switzerland was placed 13th in the Nations Cup and received another starting place for the next season. During the national championships , Gasparin was only the favorite in the sprint. In the meantime, she won the title over five kilometers at the 61st International Customs Ski Competitions in Val di Fiemme and came second in the team sprint with Irene Cadurisch. In early April 2014 she took part in the Champions Race in Moscow . For the 2014/15 season, she was the only Swiss athlete to remain on the national team.

Competition break (2014/2015)

In September 2014 Gasparin took part again as a guest starter in the German Championships and won the cross-country relay alongside her sisters (without shooting units). Two days later, she announced that she would not play any official competitions in the 2014/15 season because of her pregnancy . After the maternity leave, Gasparin resumed team training for the 2015/16 season at the end of July 2015 .

In the last race of the season 2019/20 in the Finnish Kontiolahti Selina Gasparin finished in March 2020, a race in which, because of the spread of the coronavirus no spectators were allowed in pursuit behind the Frenchwoman Julia Simon to second place.

Awards

public perception

Since joining the World Cup in 2005, Selina Gasparin has been a pioneer of biathlon in Switzerland for a longer period of time. Through targeted promotion of young talent and professionalization of the training conditions based on the example of other nations, young female athletes have gradually been given cadre status with the Swiss Association since 2010. Successes of male teammates like Benjamin Weger helped the sport at about the same time, alongside the prestigious alpine disciplines, to gain an increased status in their home country. The participation of three sisters in a World Cup relay in December 2012 made headlines beyond national borders. Articles in daily newspapers and appearances on the radio were evidence of its growing popularity. Among other things, Gasparin and her sisters participated in the question game “Ich oder Du” in the tabloid magazine glanz & gloria and in the shows Auf! On! and Rosige Zeiten from the talk show Aeschbacher as guest. After her first World Cup success, she gave a lengthy interview in December 2013 as a studio guest on the sports program Sportpanorama .
The media spoke of a "historic victory" and devoted extensive portraits to the sportswoman. In addition, since the end of 2013, Switzerland has for the first time had a venue that can be used for major international events, the Biathlon Arena Lenzerheide .
