After these achievements, he rose to the World Cup and took part in the competitions in Oberhof . He made his debut as 32nd in the sprint and missed the first World Cup points by two places. After six races in the World Cup, Frei was nominated for his first biathlon world championships in 2008 in Östersund . There he took a good place in the sprint as 37th. In the pursuit he reached 58th place, in the individual 70th place. With the Swiss relay he was only 18th. Frei won his first World Cup points at the last station of the 2007/08 season at Holmenkollen in Oslo as 28th in the sprint. In 2009 Frei became Swiss double champion in sprint and pursuit.
