Marek Matiaško

Marek Matiaško (born October 29, 1977 in Bojnice ) is a former Slovak biathlete .

Marek Matiaško has been practicing biathlon since 1993. The sports soldier from Banská Bystrica is trained by Pavol Kobela and starts for VSC Dukla Banská Bystrica . Since 1997 he has been a member of the Slovak national team. His brother Miroslav Matiaško is also a biathlete.

Matiaško made his debut in the Biathlon World Cup in 1997 in Ruhpolding in a sprint (110th) . The highlight of his first season were the Junior World Championships in Forni Avoltri . Here he won the bronze medal in the sprint. A year later he started in Pokljuka for the first time at the biathlon world championships , but did not finish in the pursuit. In the summer he also started at the World Championships in Osrblie in the summer biathlon . The 1999/2000 season brought Matiaško's first start in the European Cup. In Friedenweiler , fourth place with the relay was the best placement. Matiaško made his breakthrough in the title fights of the season. At the European Championships in Zakopane he was 17th in the singles and seventh with the relay. Things went even better at the World Championships at Holmenkollen in Oslo . After a 47th place in the sprint, he won World Cup points for the first time as 28th in the pursuit. In the next race, an individual, he even made it into the top 10 for the first time in seventh place. The 50th place in the overall World Cup was his second-best place in this ranking.

In 2002 Matiaško started at the Olympic Games for the first time . In Salt Lake City , however, a 39th sprint was his best finish. At the subsequent European Championships in Kontiolahti , he was fourth in the sprint and fifth in the pursuit. A year later he was also sixth in the singles in Forni Avoltri. In the same place he started in the summer of the year at the Summer Biathlon World Championships. In the sprint he was eighth, in the pursuit seventh and in the individual as well as with the relay, to which Pavol Hurajt belonged, he won the bronze medals. In 2004 he entered the military world championships and finished sixth in the patrol run. Matiaško always achieved his outstanding results at major events. After his seventh place in the World Cup, which was his best result so far, he was able to improve the result at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . In the individual he could reach a fifth place. Marek Matiaško took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics again. His best result in Vancouver was 33rd in the individual. With the relay he finished 15th.
