Matthias Simmen (born February 3, 1972 in Altdorf ) is a former Swiss biathlete .

Matthias Simmen started biathlon in 2001 and has been part of the Swiss national team ever since. The border guard is trained by Manfred Geyer and starts for Gardes Frontière.

Simmen took part in seven biathlon world championships and three Olympic winter games. He achieved his best results with 10th place in the sprint competition over 10 km at the 2007 Biathlon World Championships and 16th place in the individual race at the 2005 Biathlon World Championships . In the World Cup , his best result so far was the third place in the 10 km sprint on December 8, 2006 in Hochfilzen , Austria ; this makes Simmen the first Swiss biathlete to achieve a place on the podium .

In 2008 Simmen took part in a summer biathlon world championship for the first time. He won the bronze medal in the roller-ski pursuit race.

Matthias Simmen took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics. His best result was 26th place in the sprint. With the relay he finished 9th.

On March 16, 2011 Simmen announced his retirement from active top-class sport at the end of the season.

From time to time he commented on biathlon competitions as an expert at the side of Sigi Heinrich at Eurosport . He has been employed as a co-commentator at SRF since February 2012.
