Two cross-country skiing competitions took place at the II. Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz in 1928 . These were also the competitions of the 5th Nordic World Ski Championships . In addition to Olympic medals, world championship medals were also awarded.

Over 18 kilometers, all three medals were won by Norwegian athletes. Gold went to Johan Grøttumsbråten , silver went to Ole Hegge , and bronze went to Reidar Ødegaard . The Swedes achieved this in the 50-kilometer race with Per-Erik Hedlund as Olympic champion, Gustaf Jonsson , who won the silver medal, and Volger Andersson as third.

Due to the unusual temperature increase from three degrees at 8 o'clock to 25 degrees in the midday hours, the skiers were faced with severe wax problems that caused almost a third of the participants to give up. According to “Sport Zürich” there was “an unexpected defeat for the Norwegians and the most grueling battle in the history of the ski marathon”.
